Actually, he believes in the biblical account of Creation, which is Catholic. I don't know why you think there is conflict between this account and either evolution or the big bang. Who would have won those votes is pretty irrelevant, since you can't force people not to vote for a third party candidate. Neither Nixon nor Humphrey appealed enough to those states.
