      Nope, Dion is DOA.

My condolences. Both for the NDP thing, and for having been to your area and have seen the **** factor first-hand.

To be clear, it's not just his inability to speak English.

It's the fact that he doesn't know what the **** he's doing. Contrary to your opinion, the Green Shift is a ****ing terrible idea. He pushed the Green Shift even when the Liberal caucus strongly advised against it. He's clearly out of touch with the Canadian public, there's no room for a second chance here -- personally, I would love it if he got another. It'd guarantee a CPC government.

Yeah, yeah. If my aunt was a man she'd be my uncle.

              Look at the results.

As for my riding - I am quite pleased it wasn't Conservative. One of the ridings that didn't go blue b/c of splits. The Conservative candidate was, quite frankly, a moron.

It shows them in spitting distance of a majority, with a couple very narrow losses that can directly be contributed to the things NYE mentioned.

Hell, even the NDP seat in Edmonton was won because all of the artists became extremely politically active to vote out the conservatives.

Asher - I could just as easily point to Dion gaffs and claim if he hadn't made them the election would have been different. It just seems a pointless exercise (from either side).

The fact is Harper on his third try was unable to secure a majority even though the Libs put up a candidate that was supremely unready for the job. It will not get any easier for Harper than this vote.

I'd say the economic conditions made it a lot more difficult than you can imagine.

Virtually all of the other incumbent G8 country leaders are on their way out.

I am not impressed either. He should have done better. My point was that it would have required some very small improvements and he WOULD have had a majority. Instead he made some serious gaffes that cost him a majority

I hear what you are saying Flubber but if this is the best Harper can muster against Dion why would anyone think he will do better against a serious challenger?

I could just as easily say Dion's Green Shift gaff cost him the election.

The election results were a repudiation of Dion not an affirmation in Harper. Every party increased it's % except the Libs.

I don't see how this is helpful. I don't see what is wrong about pointing out how very close to a majority Harper came.

I did. The conservatives are up in popular vote and only lost net seats in

                          Quebec 1
                          NL 3
                          and Alta 1

NL, Quebec and PEI were the only provinces thet did not win.

Overall a decent performance but it would be troubling for the Conservatives that they continue to fail to make inroads in Montreal and Toronto.

But the bottom line is that with electoral math that seems to give 45-50 seats to the bloc, any party needs 155 of the remaining 260 to win-- in other words about 60% of the seats. Thats tough for anyone when facing a "natural governing party" like the Liberals who boast a fair number of traditional strongholds that would vote Liberal with any leader or candidate aside from a confirmed nazi.

Agreed. It is not helpful but is just idle speculation. That was my point.

And the NDP are up in popular vote. As are the Greens. Don't know about the BQ... The Libs were the losers all round at the expense of all parties. Asher has been pointing out for weeks what an absolutely awful candidate Dion was. Doesn't say much for the guy that can't get a majority against him, particularly on his third try.

Conservatives should be very troubled about their future prospects in a contest against a strong contender.

Agreed, but that goes back to the PC debate in the other thread (I still don't think they are on board with the Conservatives in required numbers) or even the idea that b/c of the growing influence of regionalism it is impossible for any party to form a majority these days....
