To end this threadjack once and for all, Elok and I have come to an understanding and made amends. In fact, we've agreed to be gay for one another. We're moving to Massachusettes in the weeks to come. Galnemer is disappointed, but understands that this is for the good of the community as a whole.
I think you completely missed what Elok had to say.

Why should McCain and the GOP give a **** what effect Palin would have on some pissed off demographic that is in the 'them' camp?

It's more prevalent in US politics, but I see the same things at home. We aren't discussing issues, we are screaming at each other.

It starts with the language, and the Dems and Dem campers are as guilty of fracturing the body politic into shards of warring interests as are the Repubs and their minions.

You ask why the Repubs would do such a thing. Yet you engage in the very same devices of rhetoric that lead to them not giving a **** what you think. After all, it isn't a discussion any longer. It's a war. They fight to win. You don't?

NYE, the fight's over, resolved via PM. I'm not sure what else there is to say on topic ("yeah," "pretty much"), but I think as a matter of principle we should let his thread be.

I'm not sure I understand your larger point, NYE.

You ask why the GOP should care about a group in the "them" camp. Well, why else would they pick Palin, if not to win over women voters?

Unless, of course, you are agreeing with me, and that they weren't trying to win over women at all, but men. But I don't get that from your post at all.

Oh, Palin was winking? I thought she was having seizures from the implants they were activating in her brain.

Y'know, the ones that spooled out the preset, pre-written spiels that she went into instead of answering the ****ing questions.

That said, I don't think she advances the cause of feminism all that much. Sure, she's a woman. That may be about it. She is, after all, against almost every single tenet the modern, mainstream feminist movement holds dear, for instance.

What's worse is that her appearances on the national stage are either in context of, as has been stated here before, 'giving [conservative men] a stuffy' (which, in an amazingly vitriolic polemic tract, was also highlighted by Cintra Wilson. I'd warn you, though, about reading this one... the level of hate in it is immense, on the level of a thousand burning suns) and being the ultimate Martha Stewart-***-Oprah for the Desperate (conservative) Housewife (I would think Bree could vote for this woman).

The problem is, unlike Martha Stewart, whom, for all of her other sins, was relatively well-spoken, creative, and intelligent, or Oprah, who's very well-spoken, empathic, and intelligent, Sarah Palin's speech varies between word salad or pre-prepped text, seems to have a devastating and fundamental incuriosity about the world, unempathic (yeah, Sarah, while Joe's choking up there about his dead first wife, just keep talkin' 'bout how you and John are gonna be a team of mavericks!), and uncreative (if you're going to stretch your credentials and misquote people from the other side of the aisle, at least be more circumspect about it, in this day and age of, y'know, fact-checking) among her other faults.

If anything, her glaring flaws may only serve to push back the equality women seek on her side of the political spectrum, since those entrenched might try to claim that they've tried it, and that women (regardless of how ill-prepared the example they chose was) just aren't ready.

                    Which would be a shame.

But that's just my opinion, and according to Kid, I don't know anything about feminism, don't care about women's rights, think that defriending someone on Facebook is akin to a gang rape, and believe PETA's going to enslave all women and turn them into axlotl tanks, so.

Yes, she really was the iron maiden. Particularly to anybody who stood in her way.

I guess I'm just so disappointed and upset that this is how a woman is supposed to get elected to the second (and potentially first) highest executive office in the land; by winking and flirting and devaluing intelligence. It's just so ****ing depressing that this is going on in two thousand ****ing eight.

                            No, because I get charmed.

Of course, that's also not the reason why I support him.

With respect to Sarah Palin, though, I honestly do wonder how many men actually support her for her views, rather than the views she's supposedly standing in for--and whether they'd have the same excitement were it Fred Thompson or Mitt Romney espousing them in that spot instead.

Sarah Palin is an embarrassment to intelligent women. Having her on the Republican ticket when we know she is only there because she is a woman is one of the boldest, sexist moves made by the GOP in recent memory.

Also, there is absolutely nothing about her that screams sex appeal! It annoys me when men call her sexy. She is a middle-aged mother with an outdated hairdo & wardrobe! She was probably winking because one of her fake eyelashes was caught in her eye.
