So on the whole, Shrub's policies and positions have been a lot more conservative-leaning than anything else (certainly they cannot be characterized as "librul"). The one sticking point is that he had to add a fair number of more (jack) boots to the government payroll to make sure we could spy on all the evil terrorists lurking inside our borders, etc., etc.

So the government got bigger, even as the conservative agenda was being pushed/conservative appointments were being made.

As far as the word racism, there are other people who use the term the way that I do on this site. As far as the word feminism, there are others in the world who define the word feminism the way I do. But that doesn't really matter, because if I wanted to I could use those terms in any such way that I desire.

I guess I'm just so disappointed and upset that this is how a woman is supposed to get elected to the second (and potentially first) highest executive office in the land; by winking and flirting and devaluing intelligence. Guy, I'd only consider this depressing if it worked. I understand McCain is trailing Obama in the polls, no? Or if I were a Republican, I'd be depressed that my party could do no better. Luckily, I'm not.

Social conservative leaning. The fiscal conservatives have had problems with him since the first term, causing a lot of them to go off on him. The "one sticking point" is actually of quite a concern to fiscal conservatives.

You know the statement of there is no place for moderate Republicans in the current party (in some aspects true, but in others, not really... Gov. Ah-nold comes to mind immediately)? Also the libertarian strain (more fiscal conservative than social liberal, obviously) in the Republican Party, going from Sen. Goldwater to Rep. Paul, was more and more ignored and marginalized by the Bush Administration.

Basically Bush was good for one of the two vast wings of the conservative movement.

It is, partly, interesting that the Republican Party has been considered the one with greater party discipline, while it has the widest ideological gulf. The Dems have nothing like the social/fiscal conservative split.

I'd like to point out here, that Neo-conservatism is, of course, a foreign policy ideology.

On topic: I wasn't watching that closely, but the only time I noticed the winking was during the "shout out to every teacher I can think of" section. If it was a big part of Palin's presentation, that's a little sick.

Her selection is IMHO one of the most cynical moves in this election. Certainly, in any POTUS election in my considerable years. My wife finds it personally insulting; my daughter (age 20) is enraged. Whether Palin's selection is an action of the Rove-Cheney axis or just McCain gambling our future for votes is almost immaterial. I find it repugnant in the extreme.

If we've really reached the point that a pretty model will distract us from the very distinct choice in a very important election, that's -- well, I agree with Guy -- just depressing.

Elok: Amazingly enough, most of us don't keep track of such things. Nor do we care.

And I would agree with the notion that the Dems have nothing like the "split" that's visible in the 'publican party.

My brain still rejects the notion of conservative persecution (nobody plays the victim quite like the conservatives, and this, after they've been in power for the last eight! It's among the most remarkable things I've ever seen!), but of course I expect that will intensify if McCain and Company loses the upcoming election.

I'm off to bed. A long, strange weekend.

Well in all fairness, I think it comes mostly from the perception that pop culture, the media, and to a lesser extent the schools are hostile to their views, notwithstanding their "last bastion" in the elected government. If you believe that those three institutions are in a way more powerful long-term influences in society than the fickle & functionally limited federal government, then you could be consistent in feeling overwhelmed despite having had a monopoly on the legislative and executive branches for six years, and the executive for eight.

Not saying that's my view, but it's at least understandable when you view Washington as only one small piece of the puzzle.

That's pretty much exactly what I was talking about. Basically, a conservative male pundit admitting Palin gave him a stiffy. This is what our glorious nation has come to.





To end this threadjack once and for all, Elok and I have come to an understanding and made amends. In fact, we've agreed to be gay for one another. We're moving to Massachusettes in the weeks to come. Galnemer is disappointed, but understands that this is for the good of the community as a whole.
