Regardless, this refrain is a positive for Obama -- i.e., his perceived race is a positive for him outside of African-American circles.

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

The whole premise of taking this survey result as a detriment to Obama is rather ridiculous. Their asking people about their Prejudices, their opinions about a group in aggregate. A person can believe that a group at large has one attribute but that an individual in the group is the reverse, Polling shows that people have a high favorability of Obama, they might actually be judging him on his policy positions rather then his race. People have opinions on all groups to allow them to have a quick 'knee-jerk' reaction but people aren't robots they develop opinions of individuals which supersede the group onion, Obama has clearly gone through that process and people have Obama opinions independent of their black opinion.Companions the creator seeks, not corpses, not herds and believers. Fellow creators, the creator seeks - those who write new values on new tablets. Companions the creator seeks, and fellow harvesters; for everything about him is ripe for the harvest. - Thus spoke Zarathustra, Fredrick Nietzsche

Yup, my grandfather is a big, admitted racist. He even throws away the sports page of his newspaper when bringing it in, because he doesn't want to see the black people in it. "Uppity" is commonly used. However, he'll still vote for Obama over McCain. He's not stupid.“As a lifelong member of the Columbia Business School community, I adhere to the principles of truth, integrity, and respect. I will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do.”

He's fairly conservative, but he's just sick of what the republicans have done over the last eight years, especially the war.
Or maybe he's just learned to not trust whitey, like me.“As a lifelong member of the Columbia Business School community, I adhere to the principles of truth, integrity, and respect. I will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do.”

Republicans are pitifull. The evidence is there. Republicans are racist. Duh! You have to be a complete idiot to not know that in the first place. As for blacks only an idiot would call them racist for wanting just ONE black president instead of an endless stream of whtey.-rmsharpe

Here's an interesting question. Given that blacks typically vote Democrat, what if the parties were reversed in this election? What if Obama/Biden was the Republican ticket, and McCain/Palin the Democratic ticket?
Theben/che especially, do you think that the Republicans would get a lot more than 20% of the black vote in this situation? I certainly do. If racism is a problem, it's a problem across all races - in my experience, blacks are at least as racist as whites are. So are Asians, and so are Hispanics.Follow me on Twitter: http://twitter.com/DaveDaDouche

As I said, the reason why we are pointing out white racism in this situation is that it is what is changing their vote. Black racism is not.

As for reversing the ticket, I imagine there would be more blacks voting republican, I doubt 20% though. My point isn't so much about the election in this matter, it's that people, usually right-wingers, seem to think blacks have gotten far enough along that things like affirmative action are no longer needed. They based this argument soley on the "fact" that there's no more or little racism in this country... the poll shows otherwise.I'm consitently stupid- Japher
I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned
