You would never call in an airstrike if you found out terrorists hired an apartment in New York. (Or perhaps you would, given what happened in Waco).

But more likely, you would send in special forces or SWAT police with tough restrictions on rules of engagement.

If we did what you suggest, we'd only be encouraging insurgents to hide out among civilians, which endangers them and us more.

If you're a terrorist and you knowingly shoot from a civilian target, this is your problem. I am going to eat a hamburger now and will make sure to get some ketchup for my fries this time..

Hiding among civilians and provoke a response where USA kill civilians along with the terrorists, or even better, kill civilians instead of terrorists, is the wet dream of every terrorist. Then they accomplish their goal, to make you look worse than them. And you fall right into the trap, again and again.

When I first heard about it (a collegue said that a plain crashed into the WTC) I went to all the mayor news sites. They were all down.

Chris (where has he gone?), who was nearby at the time posted photo's here. Apolyton was my major news source at the time. It was here that I heard the first tower came down, the minute it happened.

Strange thing, my first thought that moment was that I would never be able to stand on the observation deck again...
