I slept through the actual attacks ... my alarm clock woke me up at 11 a.m. CDT, more than an hour after the second tower had collapsed. I had been on vacation, and stayed up late the night before, since Sept. 11 was my first day back at work (I work evenings, so sleeping in was nothing unusual).
**sigh** When I think about that day, it still brings tears to my eyes. Part of me believes the America I knew died that day, and that what we've done since — especially outside of Afghanistan — has done nothing to resurrect what was lost, indeed has served to only bury the America I once knew even deeper in her grave.
Suffice to say, Sept. 11, 2001, brings on a whirlwind of emotions ... and I think, for now, I'm going to simply turn off everything and meditate for a while.

I was watching live web videos at work and thinking OK they have to evacuate the people, when the towers fell that was kind of surreal, like controlled demolition... the towers didn't even bend but just went down flat...
that was a shock, first that they actually flattened and that they flattened like this... but well this is history...
7 years later and US managed to screw up Afghanistan, find a scapegoat country, screw them upo even more... another 150k+ dead and 1/2 trillion USD wasted as a direct result of failed interventions... the terrorist could not have made a bigger impact for sure...
just thinking about it to this day, it seems surreal that few dozen arabs armed with paper knives managed to pull this all of... but well... it's history as they say...
it made TV history too... THE reality TV... those 3k+ dead are so shocking as they happened so spectacularly in front of everyones eyes... for 5k+ dead in Croatia... 100k+ dead in Bosnia 150k+ dead in Iraq or 1million+ dead in Rwanda - numbers do not make up for the shock - TV does.

I was studying for the physics GRE. I didn't end up doing much that day.
I was sick of the coverage later though.

don't know if fear ever entered my mind. Sheer uncomprehending shock sort of ran things for a while, before being replaced by sheer, insurmountable displeasure with those who perpetrated such an act. But being afraid? No.

As for rebuilding: yeah, get a move on. And the "Freedom Tower" is... ugh. They shoulda rebuilt them JUST THE WAY THEY WERE (notwithstanding safety upgrades). **** you. You break 'em, we rebuild.
I was watching an "ER" marathon when the news interrupted and showed the second plane coming towards the towers. I couldn't understand why there was smoke coming from the other tower. Then the narrator began talikng about the other plane. It was a bit disorienting at first until the narrator had a chance to recapitilate the whole sequence of events. The station continued to cover the story throughout, so I was watching when the towers fell. It was so surreal. The strange thing is sometime before I had a conversation with a guy about the earlier attack on the WTC and he had remarked that the towers could be brought down by ramming them with jet airplanes. I told him that I didn't think it would work because I thought that the structure of the building would hold and that most of the fuel would splatter against the building and fall to the ground.

I was still on my summer vacation, and thus woke up late. A then got this message from my mother, asking if I was okay, and when I tried to call back to ask why she would ask, the phone system was busy. I was getting breakfast together when one of my parent's friends from Panama, whom I had not seen or spoken to for years called to ask if I was okay. I still had no clue why they would be calling, and when I asked, this guy told me to turn on the television. I went, and at the time we did not have cable, so when I initially turned it on, I was getting no reception (as I said earlier, most channels used to broadcast from the WTC). I finally turned to CBS (which broadcast from the Empire State) and tunned in just in time to see the second tower fall. I don't really even remember what I felt, it was far too surreal.

The Iraqis had nothing to do with the planning or conduct of the 9/11 attacks.
Damn, I get so tired of this. He broke a Cease Fire.
Why don't you take a rememberance thread and throw all kinds of crap into it. When you croak, I'll be sure and do that for you.

The cease fire was with the UN, not the US. But then, you're never a stickler for the facts, just what feels right.
I remember I was working a Citibank at the time. And out of the corner of my ear, I hear my jackass coworker talking about, they attack us cuz they hate our freedom. That's when I find out a plane has hit the North Tower. So I point out to him that a plane collided with the Empire States building, and that wasn't terrorism. Sometimes these things happen.
Then the 2nd plane hits, and there's no longer any doubt.
No one could get on any of the news sites, so I log on to Apolyton for the first time since I'd moved to Jax, and start relaying the news from you folks to my office.

I was at work and saw most of it live on the web (cnn.com iirc), including the impact of the 2nd plane. Eventually, my dept. gave up any pretense of working and got a TV tuned into one of the networks in the conference room.

Apolyton was golden on that day. None of the news sites were up, and I was relying on rumors from folks here in the city about what had been hit and what was a target.

I was talking to Oerdin. I realize that wasn't clear.
I actually agree with Slowe here. The politization of 9/11 by the right is disgusting.
