That's from your own nytimes source. Read the I'm a PC commericals are successful.
It clearly says they were successful in affixing a label to PC users in popculture.

That is not the same as saying they were successful in driving widespread Mac adoption. Even then, success is in the eye of the beholder. They may've independently improved marketshare (that is, the switch to Intel and Windows compatibility played no role -- good luck proving that), but to me if they have a truly superior product they should be able to gain marketshare far higher than the sliver that they have now. Additionally, we know there's at least some backlash to how the Apple commercials portray Mac and PC users -- we just don't know the scale. But one thing you cannot argue is that the commercials alone have dramatically increased their marketshare, mainly because their marketshare has not dramatically increased...

So now MS is copying them. That's going to help APPLE probably more than MS.
You're being a twit. MS is not copying them, they're embracing the "I'm a PC" slogan Apple has built up and instead of applying it to just one guy, they're applying it to everyone. It's a great idea, and that doesn't help Apple in any way.

I've got this sneaking suspicion that you and Ben Kenobi were twins and you shared one brain. Now you're each left to fend for yourselves with half. It's the only explanation.
"The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."
Ben Kenobi: "That means I'm doing something right. "

    • Asher,

Newsflash! You can't increase sales by 38% over a 3 month period by just improving your product. You need advertising.

      • Yep, MS is turning the "I'm a PC" around. They are claiming it as a mark of pride, like the US revolutionary forces took "Yankee Doodle" away from the Brits.

And all that is going to do is build brand loyalty. They aren't going to get any of the customers back that are now loyal to Apple. In addition, Apple users will just become more loyal.

Yes, Microsoft brand loyalty, which was needed. And they'll try to get customers back by the products, not by commericals. It is hard to imagine Apple users being any MORE loyal to Apple.

At first, “the ads were ambiguous and confounding to some,” said Ted Marzilli, senior vice president and general manager of the brand group at the New York office of YouGovPolimetrix, a research company, but as they continued they helped improve perceptions about Microsoft.

On Sept. 4, when the teaser ads started, the “buzz” about Microsoft was 25 percent positive and 13 percent negative, Mr. Marzilli said, and by Tuesday it was 28 percent positive and 8 percent negative. Microsoft “has been beat up pretty badly by the Apple advertisements in the last six months,” he said. “These are strong numbers, good numbers, for Microsoft.”

Another research company, Zeta Interactive, using what it calls its Relevant Noise tool to mine places online like blogs and message boards for brand conversations, found what was described as overwhelmingly positive buzz surrounding Microsoft from Sept. 3 through Monday.

Of the posts analyzed by Relevant Noise during that stage of the teaser campaign, 63 percent were characterized as positive and 37 percent as negative.

“It did what it needed to do,” said Rob Reilly, partner and co-executive creative director at Crispin Porter in Boulder, Colo., and Miami. “People who got it, got it.”

Now the groundwork has been laid, I'm betting some of the other ads will focus on the internet interaction with the customer base and the re-establishing of what "I'm a PC" means in the real world.
You're a bloody moron if you believe that crap. All that happened here is that people thought the ads were retarded and so the campaign has been cancelled and replaced with something else. Happens all the time. 10 million dollars for two ads? Yeah right.

If Microsoft wanted better advertising, they should make better products and demo them in the adverts. That would immediately give them an advantage over Apple, who aren't even showing their product in their ads.

But no, it's homosexual subtexts in shoe stores.

              Utter crap.

It's not 3 months, they've been running for years.

And yes, you can. MS has done it, even.

                • As a side note, I thought the $10M payday for Seinfeld was a rumour? Does anyone have a real source for that?

Even Apple has done it with the iPhone.

                          You're clueless.
