I don't know whether McCain foresaw this, but the choice of Palin has been a huge success.
She has, single-handedly, generated more controversy and noise for the Republican side than Biden ever did.
Given that humans tend to be sympathetic towards the woman in distress archetype, the casting of Palin in a secondary position, as a person who can garner sympathy, is something of a boon for Republicans. And they still won't look weak, because their MBT is, after all, the grizzled veteran McCain.
I think a large number of swing voters are going to be pushed to the Republican side simply by the sympathy wave/backlash which the parading of the Palins' personal lives on national media is bound to create.
