VP announcements typically produce a bump for your side, Palin has produced no bump in polling for McCain and its arguable that its actually benefited Obama as his numbers continue to rise (his Gallup hit 50% today), but it's also arguable that's merely the Obama convention bounce continuing to build to full strength (convention bounce typical peaks a while after the end of the convention).
So at best it looks like a wash for McCain, right-wingers are enthused but he's lost support in the middle. McCain can't win with the Bush 2004 coalition, Hispanics have completely abandoned the Republicans along with most of those who used to 'lean' Republican (their now the new undecideds), meanwhile those that 'leaned' Democratic in 2004 are hard Dems now. Thus for McCain to win he must decisively win back the undecided middle and pray that the turn out isn't the tsunami of young and Hispanic voters that it looks like it could be. If either of those trends goes against McCain he losses and it looks like both are happening.

I just want to say that we don't want Mexicans in our party and never have. CONVENTIONS USUALLY PRODUCE A POLL BOUNCE AND OBAMA GOT NONE FROM HIS CONVENTION, AND IT INCLUDED AN ORGY AT INVESCO FIELD IN FRONT OF TWENTY BILLION PEOPLE IN A SPECIALLY DESIGNED STAGE! I forgot to add that most Mexicans do not know they can vote, and about 25% of that amount actually can't vote because a) they killed someone while mowing their lawn or b) they're illegal. Your data is underwhelming also because young voters did not ROCK THE VOTE in 2004, remember that Kerry even lost Florida, where everyone is over the age of 50 except for University of Florida students.

Wow... she definitely is a great speaker. I had heard stuff about it prior to this, but I hadn't realize just how good and confident she is up there. She was easily the best speaker of the night, and knowing what I know of McCain, probably the best speaker of the Convention.
Seems like the underestimation of the Dems struck again. She gave a great performance. Not sure how it'll play with independents or moderates, but she's sure no Dan Quayle. And she's an attack dog.
And interestingly, I found out that John Edwards in 2004 had as much experience in the Senate as Palin has as Governor of Alaska today.
