The Alaska Independence Party membership scandal. With or without merit?
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Apparently with, if you change 'membership' to 'ties'.

The mainstream media definitely picked up on it.
            Source?

To the extent that the mainstream media has picked it up, it's been to report the statement that the McCain campaign made on the story. Are you suggesting that the media should stop paying attention to him?

She gave a speech at their convention. This year. And her husband was a member as recently as a few years ago.

Wrong. Totally without merit. She doesn't have ties -- no more than my mom has ties with the democratic party by virtue of my dad being a democrat. If the mainstream press has done its research before printing, it would have known that.

Your mom gave a speech at the DNC last week? I guess I missed that...

Palin and her husband are linked to the Alaska Independence Party? Wow. I guess that means the Republican Party supports the secession of one of America's most oil-rich states. Lincoln is probably spinning in his grave 'bout now.

If I repeat it enough, disseminate it enough, it'll become true. After all, similar tactics worked wonders for the GOP and, as someone earlier in th thread said, their "alternate reality."

You lack the scope and variety of outlets of the GOP & Friends, not to mention the starting mindshare.

Enough evidence exists tying her to the party, including statements (yes, some now withdrawn, some not) from that party leadership talking about her connections that it's worth reporting and looking into further. It's clearly not some horrible smear job from the media, particularly given the original quotes from the party itself.

Now my turn. Troopergate--with or without merit?

Troopergate was reported well before the beginning of this week and wasn't part of the feeding frenzy. I didn't hear anybody complain about that coverage, only an argument on the substance.

The only mainstream coverage people in the McCain camp whined about was fictitious.

Cable TV talk shows, talk radio, print tabloids and shady Web sites aren't exactly the best sources of what I would call journalism. Sensationalism, yes, but cold, intellectual coverage of the news? Hmm. Not in particular.
