And this doesn't make any sense either. Facts are so 20th century. Elections are now solely about rhetoric and innuendo.

**shrug** One man's crap is another man's treasure.

IMO, none of what Palin did would have ever caught the light of day outside of Alaska if she'd been bypassed as McCain's VP choice. Now that she is, though, it changes the situation. Every little thing — or not so little — she did is going to have a magnifying glass over it now. After all, this is an individual who, if McCain is elected and, God forbid, something terrible happens to him while he's in office, will be thrust into perhaps the planet's most powerful position.

Speaking as an individual with that in mind, I sure as hell want to know more about her — the good and the bad. It's the only way I can make an informed decision come November.

Therein comes the media. I know which sources are partisan, which ones aren't, and go for the latter when looking to expand my knowledge on Palin (and a whole litany of other, unrelated, issues).

In the end, what Palin is going through is nothing different than what any other person experiences when seeking public office. Yes, it's likely more intense, but then again, she's running for the VP of the USA. I suspect that, in time, a lot of the hoopla will die down, and all that will remain on the radar is what qualifies as real news.

The next two months will be interesting, to say the least.

I'd give you the direct line to AP's New York headquarters if I could remember it, Dan, but I can't ... so I'll do the next best thing:

All requests from the media for interviews, comments or appearances by the AP staff are handled by AP Corporate Communications:

write to info@ap.org and address the request to:

          Paul Colford
          Director of Media Relations
Oh, and they don't like e-mail attachments, either.

And also because its shoddy gutter journalism and all the family crap was deeply mysogynistic (even people who worked on the Hillary campaign have come out and said so!)

              • What pisses me off about it is that there are legit things to investigate: the book banning issue and the police thing. You know, questions about how she has (and will) govern. edit: the AIP thing is interesting. The stuff about her church is a little scary (Iraq as mission-from-god, terror attacks against Jews punishment for not being Christian, etc), but probably no scarrier to me than Wright's bile was to others. I figure that cancels.

                • Because it sells, man, because it sells. We don't have a real media in this country. I'm contemplating getting all my serious election coverage from BBC America from here on out, and using TDS/TCR for laughs.

Giving a speech at their convention is more than just having a spouse who is a member. Is there a transcript available? It's not ancient history - this was last year, no? So not only is it a tangible connection, but it's a recent one.

                    Nice try, though.

Oh, believe me, I don't bother with the MSM. I do not watch TV news, and haven't for years. On occasion (very few & far between), we might watch BBC America.

                      • Palin's address to the AIP convention:

I’m Governor Sarah Palin and I am delighted to welcome you to the 2008 Alaskan Independence Party Convention in the golden heart city of Fairbanks. Your party plays an important role in our state’s politics. I’ve always said that competition is so good, and that applies to political parties as well. I share your party’s vision of upholding the constitution of our great state. My administration remains focused on reining in government growth so individual liberty and opportunity can expand. I know you agree with that. We have a great promise to be a self-sufficient state, made up of the hardest-working, most grateful Americans in our nation. So as your convention gets underway I hope that you all are inspired by remembering that all those years ago, it was in this same city that Alaska’s constitution was born. And it was founded on hope and trust and liberty and opportunity. I carry that message of opportunity forward in my administration, as we continue to move our state ahead and create positive change. So I say good luck on a successful and inspiring convention. Keep up the good work, and God bless you.
Nothing much there, honestly. Keep up the good work, heh.

                        • Imagine the uproar if Obama had given an address to a Black Panther convention, or a Nation of Islam convention.

                          • From the Daily Kos of all places:

Former Governor Walter Hickel (lifelong Republican - appointed by Nixon to head the Dept. of the Interior) usurped the AIP to run against Arliss Sturgulewski (the Republican candidate and first female to run for Governor in AK). Hickel WON! The AIP was legitimized and actually held the governotship of Alaska. Hickel was a huge supporter of Palin in her race for Governor.

That Sara Palin attended the AIP convention is not the "killer" revelation some are making it out to be - for a while at least, the AIP was legit. Yes, the AIP is extreme but they're not completely out of the "Alaska Mainstream."

                            • There is nothing wrong with that address, she actually calls them the competition.

That's the key, I figure. She makes it clear that she's not exactly one of them, though she then pats them on the back a few times.

Like I said, nothing really there.
