Dude. If we hand them US pasports it means we have to let them in. Did it occur to you that if we give them passports the Ruskies will simply hand them Aeroflot tickets to New York? Give them your own passports!!!

Also before you crow about it consider that as private capital flees Russia it may be replaced by that big pool of capital flowing into the Russian government's hands. Do you want to see Russia return to across the board government owhership of industry?

They have already done that to several small peoples who were universally hated by all their neighbours. We didn't even have to buy them tickets, the US have paid for them as well.

As much as the Russians would like it to be enough, their Oil revenue cannot replace the long term capital that is literally fleeing from their markets right now. This is a serious issue for the Russians. Their reactions to this problem will tell a lot about what they actually understand about capital markets and their impact on their overall economy.

Again, the flight of capital from Russia may simply invite their government to assume a larger role in their economy. I don't think that is such a good thing.

Is the capital "fleeing" from Russia foreign or Russian? Is it mostly American and British or a mixture of European?

It is from everywhere and it is leaving fast. The Russian government cannot assume the long term capital requirements of their markets...they simply do not have the ability to. They are facing a choice. Curtail long term growth or take action to attract capital again. Russian Bond yields are very, very attractive right now. If you are willing to gamble and have some rubles, now might be the time.

BTW, since I missed the weekend, a comment of the Black Sea Fleet.

For all intents and purposes it is impossible for the Russians to have made it to the Georgian coast that fast if they were not already ready for it. If it were a surprise then stores would have to be taken on, crews recalled, etc. Not only that, but 25 knots are the TOP speeds of these vessels, and while they might get that speed through the water, they are not going to get that as speed over ground. That and I seriously doubt the ability of Russian plants to maintain that stress for 24 hours (and at that extremely uneconomical speed, and not stopping to fuel once underway, their tanks would be dry upon arrival). Also, while it might be different in the Russian Navy since life is cheap for them, the major weapons of those warships would probably not be aboard unless some extreme coincidence was in play.

Most importantly, they brought 3000 troops with them. Unless you think it is normal practice for a regiment of infantry to berth on their ships constantly for no reason, then we are take at least a day to marshal, equip, and embark those troops.

Guys, can we already drop this notion of Russia being surprised and all by the Georgian "aggression"? The version supported by most of the impartial or corroborated information is that Georgia was provoked (and not just this August but for more like a year), and Russia was ready. OF COURSE the ships were underway.

A point I tried to make, but as usual you are much more detail oriented on naval matters and get the point across better.

I wonder how long it took for USS Mc Faul to reach Batumi? Wouldn't stores have to be taken on, crews recalled, a "humanitarian" cargo loaded, etc?
Or your "humanitarian aid" was already on its way to Georgia when Sukashvili ordered to erase Tskhinvali from the face of Earth?
