because this basically reads "no true American" to me.

How much thought have you given to this troll, really?
lets assume i was trolling wasp right-wingers or something (which i wasnt, no decent news-copy thread should have the exact same title as the news item)

why are YOU responding so negatively?

Is this a surprise? Between illegal entry and family sizes averaging, what, 12?

The whole thing about America being an idea is something we have cooked up to get around the fact that we have absolutely nothing else that really binds us together. All the traditional things that bind a nation together has been slowly eroded away and as we become more diverse and grow this whole idea theory will be sorely tested. Is the idea strong enough? I honestly don't know that it is. Perhaps in this day and age humans have come far enough to be binded only by an idea but the verdict is far from in.

The only "traditional thing" that bound the nation together was the collective idea. The Constitution and Declaration of Independence. The idea that other traditional things tied Americans together is a fallacy.

What they're not telling you is that many Hispanics are in fact white or how birth rates may change over the next 34 years.

do you mean that in 30 years most hispanics will be like current whites or something?

The idea thing was there from the beginning. If it fails, the nation fails, but IMO that's always been true.

Might it? Sure. It came very, very close once already.

The trick isn't to break some eggs to make an omelette, it's convincing the eggs to break themselves in order to aspire to omelettehood.

Not mentioned in the article, but this also means the US will be a Catholic-majority nation soon.

It just magically worked out then that the US shared a common language/culture. Why didn't the Soviet's collective idea hold them together?

It would be ridiculous coming from americans but neither the original article nor any of the alarmist comments were by Americans.
