NOTHING could stop us from further advance to Tbilisi. And NOTHING would have saved Sukashvili from tribunal then.
But now, surely you will protect your pet (as you already do) and I won't buy the **** about international investigators, they will justify this war criminal (like they did wrt Bosnians and Albanians who committed war crimes vs. Serbs), because he is YOUR son of the b!tch.

We responded to the AGGRESSION of Georgia vs. South Ossetia, and did so after you blocked the resolution of UNSC on the emergency session we initiated immediately after the Georgian bombardment of Tskhinvali.
If we did nothing our peacekeeping force would have been dead now. 500 dead Russian soldiers killed by aggressor.
If we did nothing the death toll among civilians would have been not 1 600, but much greater now.
And tell me, if you were in our shoes, how would you react to the attack vs. your peacekeepers (at least ten dead after the first attack vs. Tskhinvali) and massacre of civilians most of whom are your citizens (1 600 dead civilians now)?
The last time when alike number of US citizens were killed, US launched invasions to Afghanistan and Iraq (completely unprovoked though), iirc.

2) I'm agnostic on the actual Georgia confrontation. I see both sides of it. But I think Russia has demonstrated, here and elsewhere, that it believes it has the right to act unopposed in former satellite states, which is unacceptable and a step back towards the Soviet Union.

If we didn't intervene to stop the massacre of South Ossetians and Georgians would have killed tens of thousands of them, what would you say then?
That we did a right thing to let Georgians massacre Russian peacekeepers and Russian citizens, because Georgia is a sovereign country and have a right to massacre anyone who wishes?

The thing is, Russia is not the Soviet Union, it is not the strategic equal of the United States, and our interests sharply diverge in many, many places. You are no longer an existential threat, but you are an obstacle. And in the long run, you could become a genuine threat again. So, it's best now for us to defang you permanently.

2) Georgians have started that. They burned 10 South Ossetian villages and destroued the South Ossetian capital. Even if some Georgian civilians suffered during our retaliation (as I believe the case, because it's war), they brought it on themselves, because THEY STARTED THIS WAR, NOT US, GOD DAMN IT.
