given that the people of those two areas have excercised independence for over a decade, what evidence would you have that they don't want to continue the status quo.

The big issue is that of Georgian refugees from those areas from over a decade ago.

    • Serb, he's saying that the facts will be reached in an impartial manner. That's good. I think when you get to a comp with sound that you will like what you hear.

No evidence, but let them vote on it.

Actually HRW was way more balanced than that, the following two videos let a tiny bit of air out of my "support Georgia" balloon.

The Abkazh at least have a multiparty democratic state- what Russia did was accept the PAST declarations of independence by both those region. IE, both the Abkahz and the S. Ossetians have in the past stated "we want to be independent!" The difference was that until yesterday, all other states ignored them. Russia finally decided that it served its interests to accept their declarations.

The issue of course is that in the early 1990's large numbers of ehtnic Georgians were driven out from these regions. The Georgians will claim that these folks have the right to return home (which they do) and that if they returned home, then the demographics would change to the benefit of Georgians. The Abkahz and S. Ossetians will claim that those Georgians were settled in their lands under Soviet times in order to make them subservient to Georgia, and they likely would refuse to let all the refugees back home.

They already voted for independence on referendums (a couple of times).

You guys have a really interesting way of stopping bloodbaths: Burning, looting, shooting civilians, dropping cluster bombs, blowing up bridges, shooting reporters.

                    • You find it interesting?
I'm really surprised. Isn't it what you have done/still doing in Iraq to "free the Iraqis"?

With the only exception of course, that there were no bloodbath untill you have arrived there.

                        • There was a bloodbath, Lancer, and some of our guys were in the middle of that ****.
I very very doubt the US of A would act differently if you were in our shoes.

                          • I think that Russia's action in Georgia is okay since it maintains the balance of power.

We have Moscow, Idaho and they have Moscow, Russia. We have St. Petersburg, Florida and they have St. Petersburg, Russia. We have our own Georgia they can have the other Georgia. I don't see what the big deal is!

Well lets see. Let that be determined by the UN etc etc. For now, I suggest you pull your troops back and let the human rights groups do their job. Having troops in Georgia is causing problems for the whole world and getting in the way of those who seek to determine the truth in an impartial manner. Also, any time NATO and Russian forces are operating in close proximity the chance of a mistake happening that ends the world is that much greater. Let the guys in that find things out, and remove your troops from places where they don't belong (Yes I believe the same about the US and Iraq) and lets all live through this mess.
