Will Georgia turn into a Moscow satellite?

Let's face it - Georgia is defeated.
Their little military adventure in South Ossetia has ended by destruction of their new shiny army. The Russian tanks were on outskirts of Tbilisi.
But, we do not occupy the entire country, we didn't annex it, we didn't owerthrow the current (nazi, ok, - war criminal) regime, we didn't make it our satellite as many people here suggested.
What we have now in Georgia is what? 8km-wide buffer zone to prevent any further possible attacks on SO?
Personally I think, it's a temporal measure until the things will calm dawn and there be some kind of UN decision about the conflict. If there be EU peacekeepers in this zone (I mean between Georgia and South Ossetia) - fine, but don't expect us from leaving South Ossetia, at least in the near future. We will stay there, 'cause the Georgians have demonstrated how exactly they want to re-integrate them in Georgia. Besides we recognized them as independent state and will talk to their leadership about future cooperation (including military cooperation), not with Sukashvili. He has no authority over South Ossetia and Abkhazia.


And yes, lets all live through this mess. Things really need to calm down now.

The worst for Russia (short of war between NATO and Russia) would be the Ukraine joins NATO, Russia gets kicked out of Sevatopol, NATO divisions take up positions in Poland and the Ukraine, foreign investment in Russia ceases. The G8 becomes the G7, Russia has to try to match NATO rearming, that won't go so well.

I fully expect this.

The worst for NATO, short of war, Russian troops remain in Georgia and we have to pay a new cold war, which we'll do if we have to.

I expect this as well.

I never predicted one. In fact the conflict might turn out to have been buying opportunity of the year.

But I don't buy Russian stocks for the simple reason that I don't trust your legal system, and without an underlying culture of respect for the law, good corporate governance etc equity investments are not really investments but gambles. No matter how attractive the companies might be.

The consequences for NATO could be much more than just that. The first thing that comes to mind is 50, 000 NATO troops in Afghanistan that supplied through Russia.

Yeah, we would have to get out of Afghanistan, the Taliban takes over and then its mostly your problem.

Oh, one more edit: The Ukrainians are telling Moscow that the rent for Sevastopol is going up a bit. Moscow doesn't pay, well bye bye Russia.

The divisions in Poland and Ukraine might depend on Obama or McCain, I'll grant you that.
