Bah! Britain and France on their own could defeat Russia in a war.

Its just that we try to stay out of the fight between our two hotheaded cousins.

    • Today I was very impressed by the tough stand of Germany and France. Maybe they can handle this mess. But! Lets see what happens when Russia turns off the fuel. I'd expect that next.

To us? Well, they'll lose the income that is the base of their economy, the infrastructure they invested in heavily becomes suddenly useless (certainly to some extent, for example pipelines), and they also lose lotsa credibility as a supplier, since potential customers will have to think twice if it's a wise move to buy from someone who doesn't guarantee safe supply.

So in short, there are always two sides of the coin.

I hear there's going to be an emergency meeting of the EU. What do you think will come out of it?

                  • If I understood correctly they'll do this meeting if Russia doesn't withdraw from Georgian territory, starting from today, as they agreed to. What comes out of it, dunno, it's all very vague currently.

                      • Wow, perfect example of a western anti-Russian propaganda.
I'll counter it with another anti-Russian propaganda - here is the photo of that hosptal http://www.berlinonline.de/berliner-...titelseite.pdf
It was destroyed to rubble by Georgians long before the Russian army was in Tskhinvali. Yet your paper states that Putin did it.

In any case, i wonder who they asked for about casulaties and where they found that morque, after all it's all in ruins now so it's unoperational. Maybe it's a hospital patients/personnel deaths? About 150 people were evacuated from it's basements so 45 deaths sounds about right for a country's biggest hospital that was shelled to rubble in the middle of the night.

Also, are you sure they didn't mistaken Ossetian Tskhinvali for Georgian Gori, like CNN did http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVNblG9PJMk ? I guess, if you can't find cities destroyed by Russians, then you can just show an Ossetian city destroyed by Georgia and say that it's a Georgian city destroyed by Russia.

                        • Some people here just don't understand that you don't provocate Russia, Russia provocates you, should it wish so.

Putin is the good old KGB guy US used to deal with during Cold War, the same tactics and attitude (see 2nd Checnya War for insight).

Talking about propaganda - I happen to live in Latvia, a former soviet republic and I have Western, Latvian and Russian channels on my TV just one +/- click away.
Yesterday I had quite a laugh during the news in BBC, Latvian television and the Russian state channel RTR (PTP in cyrillic).
You have to see it to believe it happens in 21st century..

Ellestar, I admit I have a somewhat biased view on this, being a politically aware citizen of a former soviet republic, but, you should stop your one-sided speculations.
                          They don't help your country.
Everyone sees now what "pulling troops out" means in Russian and other euphemisms that we've grown so used to during the years of USSR.

You mean, i should stop exposing blatant lies and propaganda in Western media? Why so? You don't like to see what a joke your supposedly "free press" really is, or what?

Do you have any proof that Russia didn't start pulling troops out? I think you don't understand the difference between words "start" and "end".

As a bonus that story was linked to at the end of your op-ed by the Russian official. Perhaps it is you that needs to improve his grasp of the English language?

You are not exposing anything with speculations like in your above post.
To expose lies you must have facts that show the opposite.

You don't like to see what a joke your supposedly "free press" really is, or what?
Well, it takes a very special kind of person to not notice that the opinions of this conflict differ so much in Russia and basically the whole World.
And it repeats over and over. There must be some catch, shouldn't there?

Or let me phrase it the other way - have you ever thought why there is always Russian press and "Western" press?
Why there was no such sharp distinction say in U.S. before and during Iraq war, or in any other democratic country for that matter?

Will you also pretend that Russians haven't taken Poti now (when they were supposed to be going out full steam for a full 24h now)?

You have to learn not to be hypocritical yourself before you call others hypocritical.
Otherwise you risk to sound, well, like Russian propaganda..
