We didn't join WW2 for anyone's freedom - we were attacked by Japan and the Germans declared war on the US.
Ok, I can see this has no point so this is my last one of these replys. Normally I can't be bothered debating with people whose mind is set so...
Sure, and did we have to move a million guys to europe to defend ourselves from Germany?
As for WW1, the US joined to prevent a German victory. Yes, Wilson himself might have actually believed in spreading American values, but there were real world politik reasons we got involved. The aftermath of that war shows just how much "freedom" actually got spread.
Fighting oppression...
Again, they were fighting for survival. Any rat will fight when cornered. The US fought in Europe for the freedom if its peoples. THAT is stepping up.
1. Look above for the "freedom" bit.
2. Actually, technically the Germans were fighting for "oppression", not "survival." That certainly makes them more bad-ass than the US in both those wars.
They certainly were bad ass. However the US fought a two front war and W O N.

And in the end, the Pentagon comes out right after Bush and says "The US WILL NOT engage Russia militarily over this," which means that Bush's words were EMPTY words. No much "import" for empty threats.
Our sailors and airmen will be in theater and be available to be shot -- something I would suggest that Russia, despite it all, does not wish to happen. It doesn't matter at all that the US military will not engage with the Russians.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

As the article said, our sailors will only be in theater if Turkey allows them, and even then, that is weeks away. as for our "airmen", the Pentagon told the Russians exactly were they would be staying for the night, and there were no reports of the Russians blocking air traffic in an out of Tblisi.

It doesn't matter if it's just the Air Force. The Air Force can be present in many Georgian cities one way or another, delivering humanitarian supplies to little old ladies.
You're thinking linearly, as is your habit.

Actually, NO THEY WON'T. Air force personnel are not going to be randomly roaming the country - there are there to deliver the stuff into Tblisi , to look after their planes while on the aroung, and that is it.
Maybe you seem to be ignorant of the fact that the US is using large Jet cargo planes, meaning only a few large airports or air bases will be physically capable of taking the supplies, or that the US isn;t going to be sending millions of dollars in aide to any place were 100% control by the Georgian government is no assured.

No, actually I am thinking about reality, while you are accepting Bush's words and then going off into fantasy land. Well, the Russians are paranoid, but they aren't stupid and they sure aren't living in the fantasy land you seem to inhabit. The facts that they have been prett much ignoring Bush for the past few days is ample proof that no one in Moscow bought Bush's words like silly old Saakashvili did. That is why the Pentagon came out and explicitly told Saakashvili he was wrong.

You do not know what the US will do, considering that the US has not pulled any options off the table (neither does Russia). Stop pulling things out of your ass.

Sorry to break this to you, but having common sense is all one needs to know you are obviously wrong.
That and actually keeping abreast of the news (like, listening to the PENTAGON), instead of keeping ones head in their ass.
The US has been flying in relief since Wednesday. Care to give a single source that places American air force personnel anywhere except Tblisi? Please, its being two whole days.

All options are on the table. We can adjust daily.

Actually, not all options are on the table. Because a lot of them we have already used elsewhere.

They are on the table as relates to the humanitarian mission. If the US wants to do something (say, place humanitarian aid in Poti to break a Russian blockade), there's nothing stopping it from doing so. The US has those resources readily available.

How many divisions do we have in Iraq? (and other places, where they can't be removed and sent into some other situation in a timely manner)

I don't see whole divisions needed for a humanitarian mission in Georgia. We could supply the entire country with spare forces, if we wished.
Or am I misunderstanding what you are proposing?
