Personally I think this is a worthless populist idea, the democratic version of pavlovian tax cut demands by Republicans.

It will come to naught, and isn;t even that good of an idea. But even his bad ideas are not as pitiful as McCain's bad ideas.

You are assuming that the oil companies will drill once they get the leases -- even though they have thousands of acres of leases on proven reserves which they are now NOT drilling on.

But assuming the oil companies do start drilling, (a) the oil won't start flowing until AFTER McCain (or Obama) is out of office, and won't be enough to close the energy gap. --Meanwhile, the enviroment will get screwed up.

I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned

Let's say we had a housing shortage; would the best way to get out from under that shortage to be to not build any new houses?

You can say up and down that oil is finite, but if you're so certain that we're headed for economic tragedy when that day supposedly comes, what good will it do for us to delay the inevitable by not drilling there? And at what point would you allow drilling?

Build apartment houses & condos instead. Less materials; more living units. Always look at the alternatives.

GDP growth at 1.9%, unemployment at 5.7%, inflation around 4 or 5%.

That's totally comparable to Zimbabwe's -5.7% GDP decline, official unemployment at 80%, and inflation at 11,000,000%.

But Zimbabwe is your model, so I shouldn't go around knocking ZANU.

So your Soviet-style solution is to shove people into small flats and lower their standard of living.

I didn't say "Soviet." I didn't say "shove." I didn't say "small." And I didn't say "lower their standard of living." Other than that...er...yeah, I guess.

BTW: Has anyone heard from the oil companies why they aren't drilling on the leases they already have?

But the oil industry says it pays millions of dollars for these leases, and that it would not make sense to purposely leave the areas untapped.

Rather, years of exploration is required before drilling can even begin. In some cases, no oil is found on leases they hold. In others, drilling the wells and building the pipelines takes years. It is especially hard now that a worldwide boom in oil exploration has pushed up the prices - and timelines - for skilled workers and specialized equipment.

"No one is sitting on leases these days," said Rayola Dougher, senior economic advisor for the American Petroleum Institute. "Those making those assertions don't understand the bidding and leasing process."
