Barack finally has his bounce. For weeks many political experts and pollsters have been wondering why the race between Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain had stayed so tight, even after the Illinois senator wrested the nomination from Hillary Clinton. With numbers consistently showing rock-bottom approval ratings for President Bush and a large majority of Americans unhappy with the country's direction, the opposing-party candidate should, in the normal course, have attracted more disaffected voters. Now it looks as if Obama is doing just that. A new NEWSWEEK Poll shows that he has a substantial double-digit lead, 51 percent to 36 percent, over McCain among registered voters nationwide.

George HW Bush was down by 17 points the summer of 1988, and went on to win by 8 points and 200 electoral votes.

Bill Clinton was down by 10 points in summer of 1992 and won by 5.

George W. Bush was down by 5 points in the summer of 2004 and won by 2.

Gerald Ford was down by 30 points in the summer of 1976 and, though he lost, did so by only 2 points (and, really, a handful of votes in two states would've swung the electoral college in his favor).

I guess McCain can take solace in the Gallup poll released a day after the Newsweek one that showed the race within the margin of error.

We got a real indication of Obama's strength in the Democrat nomination.

What happened with Obama's crazy pastor? I would've thought that damaged him quite badly. I mean, McCain was consorting with nutty religious people as well, but you expect that from a Republican. Plus, they weren't close to him, personally.

Obama has not only seperated himself from him. He has spoken out in opposition to what he stands for. That's going to get him more whitey points that anything. Blacks don't seem to care as they get a black president, but I don't think most of them have considered the true consequences.
