  • Shame on you China.

Just a short story some might be interested in.

My boss organised a "Music Festival" to be held in Beijing China; 2,000 Singaporean brass instrument students from 6 Singaporean schools flew over to Beijing, all with their instruments.

So they land in Beijing the other day, and what happens? Beijing Airport holds all of their instruments and asks them to pay (tax) in order to have them released from the airport.

What is the tax? SG$200,000 (US$140,000).

So now, there are 2000 young students, stuck in Beijing, with their instruments held at ransom and they can't perform. These students paid good hard money to play at this festival and Beijing has to be a ******** and tax their instruments because of SECURITY REASONS.

A big **** you to China.

Hmm, maybe it's the lack of sleep, but this inspiration just hit me: If Asher were to come to Chicago, he could both be with his gay lover Q^3, AND meet Ming in person, AND see the great city FrostyBoy loves so much.

China sucks. Well, the government. The people are just trying to live.

For some reason I think I'd get along fine with Ming and Rah. They're both troublemakers, we just don't know about it. We're kindred spirits.

Last time we had a PolyMeet in Chicago, Ming was engaging in some illicit activities, while--in the same room--I had no idea it was going on.

Later, he'd ask me why I did not participate, and I had to confess that I honestly just did not notice.

              The illicit activity?

                @thread

But seriously, I think that this will eventually be settled without having to pay a major fine. Sounds like it was a miscommunication somewhere. Hopefully, they won't miss the festival.

However, I had thought that Beijing postponed its musical festival along with other activities that involved foreign performers until after the Olympics.

For $70 per instrument, I'd tell the Chinese to go F- themselves and buy some newer, cheaper instruments on the streets.

Are you sure it's not some dumb guards trying to rip you off w/o knowing how much money they're asking for?

I wouldn't think so. Guards wouldn't do that to foreigners as they tend to complain loudly.

Perhaps they didn't go through the proper channels somehow when arranging their trip. Security is extra tight in Beijing right now, and there are a lot more hurdles to jump over (ooh, Olympic metaphor!). Still this story seems a bit suspicious to me, something is missing.

Yes, Asher should go on a polymeet to Chicago.

                        Visit the Wax museum.

                        Hmm, maybe not.

                        Ride in one of these:

And go see the famous clock tower

And even the tower bridge too.

After he's done, he could go to the theatre, and watch a show or two.

Or if he's feeling adventurous take in a footie match. Chicago usually has some stunning teams playing.

He could go see Arsenal in Highbury

Or go crosstown to watch their rivals.

                        Isn't Chicago amazing?

China is not so bad. In their #1 allied country, North Korea, the students would have been the ones held at ransom.

                          Not to mention this...

So that's a hundred dollar tax each? That's not much. Maybe they should have read the fine print before going there. There would seem to be more to this story than you have related.

Agathon, this is not import of music instruments. Maybe it is time China abides by the rules.
