Interesting statement coming from a citizen of Quebec.

For those who aspire to live in a high cost, high tax, big government place, our nation and the world offers plenty of options. Vermont, Canada and Venezuela all offer you the opportunity to live in the socialist, big government paradise you long for. –Senator Rubio

I've derided the use of "states rights" as a cover to protect the institution of slavery. But states rights itself... I'm basically neutral on the general concept.
If the Civil War had been simply about the right of states to seceed from the Union (say, because of trade policy only), I'd be quite pro-Confederacy. But it didn't go down like that. The Southern states seceeded primarily because they were convinced those damned Yankees were gonna take their slaves away (I think this was overblown). "States rights" is a good concept, but if used to protect something as monstrous as slavery I have to come down on the other side. When two (or more) principles conflict, you gotta pick between them.
Incidently, in this thread I made no argument whatsoever concerning states (or provinces) rights. I simply asked what happens to Alberta if it goes independent and then its oil runs out. Worth thinking about, if you're in Alberta (and care for the generations to come).

Albertans have both the guts and the money, something Quebec has never had.

At the current rate of extraction and given the current estimates of reserves with today's technology, it'd take 400 years to run out. The amount of usable reserves is constantly going up, currently faster than extraction rate is, due to improving technology as well as economic feasibility (due to the high price of Oil).
While the Oil will run out, this is an extremely long-term concern.

Just a counter-troll. Only difference is mine is the undeniable truth, which is why you've no response.

Texans have an identity separate from oil and money so I'd have a lot more respect for them if they went for secession. Albertans are just whiners who just hit it big at the 6/49. There's no difference between them and Manitobans other than $. So they basically define themselves as people with money who don't want to be bothered with this country full of poor people. It's a great basis to start a new nation. Is your bill of rights going to specify that its articles only apply to those who make more than $60K/year?
Now that one was just sad. If you could mask your intense jealousy, this thread could be more productive. Although I think this thread's reached its quota on input by Quebec welfare cases.
And the reason for leaving would be because the federal government would overstep its legislated and agreed-to boundaries to make a cash grab at the expense of Alberta. We're not talking about just sharing the money, when the federal government meddles like it has in the past it drives away investment and pretty much instantaneously destroys Alberta's economy just to keep gas bills down in Ontario and Quebec. It'd be a sign that Alberta is not respected -- which it clearly is not.
Alberta already shares its wealth with the rest of Canada -- Quebec alone gets billions of dollars from Alberta every single year.

I think if Alberta separates from Canada, Quebec should repay the 50-someodd billion they've received from Alberta.

He only calls you a nation because he doesn't want people to think you're Canadian.
