You know, it's not the Russian umbrella that's the alternative to the American one...

Russia and Europe will eventually need to work together to stop the Chinese. In my opinon the most likley scenario for WW3 is China trying to annex Siberia around 2030. Russia holds them off for while, but time would be on China's side. Europe would more or less be the pre-Pearl Harbor USA to the future Russian Churchill.
When things go downhill either European nations back Russia with troops and not just aid, or nukes start flying.
Now you may be wondering where the America is in all of this... But you should remember that ever since His Holiness Prophet Barack Obama was elected President for life and the cult of his personality instated as the official state religion, the USA has been very isolationist and had in fact let China annex Taiwan in 2017 with barley an offical note of protest.

Unless China gets ahold of Central Asia before hand, Russia still has an upper hand. Even Russia's navy can close off the Straits of Malacca to Chinese interests (and honestly, Indonesia would do it for them anyway), and Siberia isn't going to produce for them until years after capture. China is the WW3 version of WW2 Japan.
"The DPRK is still in a state of war with the U.S. It's called a black out." - Che explaining why orbital nightime pictures of NK show few lights. Seriously.
Now in a parallel universe where the elections of 08 had had gone differently Premier Hillary Rodham Clinton would respond to Chinas invasion of Siberia by playing both sides for as long as possible, then at the moment when Russia had suffered enough damage and China was most dependant on imports of resources, she would blockade China and launch a succesfull invasion of Taiwan. She would use the victory over China (which would be earned mostly by Russia) to point out that the last US president John McCain had not been able to hold the island while she as the first premier of the supposedly fledgling and economically weak American Union was. The apparent success of the war helped to convince the Welsh and English people to support their goverments in renewing negotiations to enter the Union that had been discontinued 17 years earlier at the onset of the 2nd American Civil war.
The new EuroChancler would then take advantage of Russia’s weakness and Clinton’s decision to declare war on the New Confederacy and Republic of California to invade Iran and Palestine to complete the final solution of the Muslim question.

Completely right on that. China in 2030 is WW2 Japan just with a billion people more.
But considering the inroads they have already made in central Asia all they would need to do is convince Khazahstan to join them. Or perhaps invade it a few years earlier on the pretext of eliminating terrorist training grounds.

Not quite a gift more like a weight to keep the western part of "the Ukraine" in Russia.

Aye, the Kommersant paper says so. I translated it from Russian myself, lemme see if I can find the same article in their English version...
Nope, no version in English yet. http://www.kommersant.ru/doc.aspx?Do...7224&NodesID=5 for those of you whose names start with S.
