  • You planned to vote for a democrat and then switch to republican in the same election.

Um... because the Democrat I was backing is basically defeated. Am I thus required to vote for ANY Democrat? Or can I vote for the candidates I like the best, rather than a party?

She isn't beat, but she can't win. All she can do is **** the whole thing up.

          • She can win. Say if a prostitution scandel comes out involving Obama (client #8?), the superdelegates would flock en masse to Clinton, giving her the win. I'm sure part of her strategy is trying to see if any skeleton's in Obama's closet come out.

Societal norms has declared a bunch of black men standing around on a corner is scary. Those societal norms have been, of course, based on the ideal that black men are violent, thuggish, etc. Black people are not immune to these societal norms, even though they push through them.
Is Jesse Jackson a racist? The "societal norm" is not about skin color, its about crime and violence. Young men are more prone to and capable of hurting others and young black men are perceived as an even greater threat than young white men. But both are feared... Society has little or nothing to do with it, fear and survival drive the prejudice...

You are deluding yourself if you don't think societal norms haven't played a major role. Why do people feel fear and survival issues about a bunch of black men on the corner rather than similarly dressed white men? Could it be because the society has been advancing the idea that black men are more violent and dangerous? It is a societal norm that has been drilled into us. We aren't born fearing young black men.

People do, just not as much... If this was 60 years ago and I was a black man in the south and I was walking thru an alley occupied by several white men I'd be nervous, even moreso than if they were black. Why? First, males are more dangerous than females. Second, white men were more dangerous than black men... That dont make a racist...

You didn't answer my question: is Jesse Jackson a racist for being apprehensive about walking down an alley at night occupied by several black men?

Could it be because the society has been advancing the idea that black men are more violent and dangerous?
You mean the media reporting crime? When even black leaders acknowledge the problem of black on black crime, its a bit ridiculous to suggest its all a figment of our imagination.

It is a societal norm that has been drilled into us. We aren't born fearing young black men.
We're born fearing the unknown, that aint society...

I have already stated that many black people are racist towards other black people.

That shows how serious and deep the problem is. It is at the same level as the caste system in India.

No, because he isn't oppressing them.

African Americans oppress other African Americans all the time.

When the mother tell her kids (explicitly, or implicitly) that they won't be any good. When African American police officers treat African Americans more harshly, when their own community tells their children that the only two choices they have are to act like a slave or a thug, and not like a man, then they are oppressing each other.

                          The oppression is deeply rooted.

                          • I agree with Jon Miller. Societal norms are not going to change overnight and many blacks perpetuate what they've been told to believe from the society. I'd imagine that even looking at crime numbers, to be afraid of a random black man on the street is an obvious case of prejudice. Do you always paint groups of people with a wide brush due to the actions of a subset of those groups?

Oppression isn't required in order for someone to be a racist.
