Are single-malt whiskey snobs supersad haughty people, or are they on to something?
A Oirishman was driving down the street in a sweat because he had an important meeting and couldn't find a parking place. Looking up to heaven he said, "Lord take pity on me. If you find me a parking place I will go to Mass every Sunday for the rest of me life and give up me Irish Whiskey!"
Miraculously, a parking place appeared.
He looked up again and said, "Never mind, I found one."

It's his birthday, for crying out loud. Give the guy a break!

Try to convince these other no-good rotten bastards.

I can't. I'm sworn to secrecy on penalty of torture and death.

So, for an update. I've been to several Whisky tasting shows and also have tried several through business dinners, I've found a couple I truly love and purchased bottles of:
Glenmorangie (I got a bottle of the 10-year old original, the 18-year old was fantastic at tastings but it's a bit too pricey)
Macallan (bottle of the 12-year old)
I've also tried Glenlivet, Glenfiddich, Highland Park, and Talisker. All pretty good, but didn't taste as good to me as the Glenmorangie and Macallans.
The only single-malt I've tasted and absolutely detested as Laphroaig. All I could taste was iodine. Awful.
So, in summary, I think there is some merit to the claim that there's something to be had with single-malts. Though I still enjoy JW Black, even though most snobs frown on the blended.
I also still have a bottle of Crown Royal.

Asher- you've clearly got a taste for the Speyside malts. The one other you really need to try is Glenfarclas- it's one of the very best from that region.
If you didn't like Laphroaig, avoid Lagavulin. You're probably best off avoiding Caol Ila too, although that's less aggressive. To be honest, I'm quite surprised you liked Talisker is Laphroaig was a problem, although Talisker isn't as hardcore.
It's also woth investigating vatted malts. They're blends that only use single malts, rather than the cheaper blended varieties. There's a genuinely brilliant non-chillfiltered one from Skye called Poit Dubh, and it's a match for just about any single malt on pure taste terms. Vatted malts are quite rare, though- they get unfairly confused with blended whisky.
Give Balvenie a try. Their 12 year olds are good, I enjoy the doublewood, probably the best whisky at that price IMHO.
I agree on Laphroaig. It has much too strong a smokey/peaty flavour for my taste. It must be an acquired taste, I can appreciate a glass every now and then for a change but I can't enjoy it in any quantity.
