Ask for two glasses - one with whisky and one with ice - then you can both drink and spin
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

        PRESENT:

Now in the process of figuring out the best Scotch whiskey, I've discovered that the Scotch-drinking community is full of supersad haughty douchebaggery, as everyone seems to say the only Scotch is single-malt Scotch, served neat.

So, why are single-malts better? By definition, they are inconsistent. They have a simpler flavour also, to my understanding.

Also: Why do they look down upon adding ice ("on the rocks")? What's the big deal?

        You decide!
        Johnny Walker Red Label...

At least go for the Black Label stuff if you're going to drink that...

Why would I pay a lot more for something I'm not sure if I'd like?

Plus I'm not sure Soviet Ontario carrys Black Label at my local store.

And thank you for illustrating the concept of supersad, doucehbaggery surrounding the whiskey drinking community.

            That was obviously the point.

It is rough and cheap. Johnny Walker Red is a tramp/alcoholic drink of choice over here.

When I was younger than you, I used to think that all whiskies tasted like that, until I saw the error of my ways.

What would you recommend, my non-trampy frigid friend?

Talisker, Caol Ila, Glenfiddich Caoran Reserve, Dalwhinnie and LaPhroaig are all good. Bruichladdich makes lots of noise about themself but doesn't live up to it, and then there are all the others.

It's not all about Scotch. Some very good Irish whiskys too, whether single malts or blends.

Dunno if you've tried any of the peaty whiskys. For irish try Connemara Single malt peated and for Scotch Laphroaig is a good one to try. Very smokey and peaty so it's not to everyone's taste. I would try in a bar rather than with a whole bottle to start.

I also quite like Jamesons, which is just a very common mass production blend. The 12 year old much better than the standard, but if I'm gonna have a cheap blended I'd get Jamesons rather than a Scotch.

There's also some very good stuff made in the US but someone US based is probably better placed to make recommendations there.

Whisky community is like the wine community though, there are lots of terrible snobs/bores. Like with wine I reckon try different stuff, if you like it, drink it. There are plenty of enthusiastic experts who aren't snobby and superior you just need to find them. You sometimes find that the people who are most snobby and superior are acting like that because they don't really know what they are talking about.

Si, and as MikeH says, try whiskeys from Isle of Islay in a bar - they are a bit special.

They are but there's also a good chance you might hate them.

I hear there are some good bootleg distillers in the hills of Virginia.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Actually Black Cat mentions the peaty Islay whiskies, which are my personal favourites . My favourite so far is Lagavulin, though I also like Ardbeg, Laphroaig and Caol Ila. In fact I can't imagine not liking an Islay whisky...

Talisker is also nice too and I am particularly partial to the Welsh whisky, Penderyn just down the road from where I live.

It's all down to taste really, nothing about snobbishness as far as I'm concerned - just a wish to avoid paint stripper....
