  • Their objectives will be to remain independent, when the only world super power wants nothing better than to conquer you.
So Venezuela's great plan to perseve its independance is to conduct an unprovoked aggressive war against Colombia?

Btw, what do you think the US objectives will be that warrant bombing the hell out of Cuba?
According to Che, Cuba is going to attack us in some grand anti-imperialist crusade.

Oh ****. You are probably one of those people who thought Iraq would be a thriving pro-US democracy right now. There's no way that's ever going to happen in Cuba
Has anyone here advocated invading let alone occupying Cuba?

    Certianly not after another attack.
Maybe you didn't get the memo. Che said CUBA would initiate hostilities.

How do you think Fidel has stayed in power for so long. The Bay of Pigs was the worst military mistake in US history.
    1.) Hardly.

2.) The CIA isn't the military.

If Cuba attacks Gitmo, we would be more than justified in destroying Cuba. They may turn anti-US, but that's not really the point. Nor would it matter.
We wouldn't have to destroy Cuba, just slaughter everything that approaches Gitmo. After the Cuban dictatorship wages an unprovoked aggressive war, alienates ever international friend it has in doing so, and suffers a humiliating defeat through Casto's incompetance and insanity in attacking the super power next door the people will take care of things themselves.

Ummm, punish Cuba for attacking Gitmo, perhaps?
What do you mean destroy Cuba? Use nukes are attack the population in some other way?

I am sure he is being figurative. In todays pansy word of gross exaggeration, the only thing we would need to do for everyone to scream "OH MY GOD THE EVIL AMERICANS DESTROYED THEM!" is to bomb a few power plants and a government building or two.

I'm just trying to figure out how you guys think there would be a regime change and more US bases there.

I don't think there would be more US bases. I think Floyd said Gitmo would add some acres, but I don't think that. We don't need it.

As far as regime change I think the Cubans themselves will do it afterwards. According to Che Cuba attacks us, then loses. People don't like losing, and they especially don't like losing when dragged into a war they had no interest in and no chance of winning. Such a military defeat even without occupation or invasion is just the sort of thing to 1.) physically break the back of Cuba's dictatorship and 2.) singnal it is time to kick out the deadbeats who just got your son killed for nothing.

OMG we actually agree on something. We really don't need Gitmo at all. So why would we try to defend it? Pride?

I think you are assuming that Cuba is the aggresor in this and I'm assuming the US is. It's going to depend on how the Cuban people percieve it. I will agree with you again that if Cuba is the aggressor in this hypothetical war that the Cuban people are going to be thinking about regime change.

I said we didn't need to expand its territory.

I am going off of Che's scenario, in which Cuba attacks America soley as a show of support of its communist brothers in Equador and Venezuela and not because of any action by the US against Cuba itself.

Yes, it is absurd, but this is Che we are talking about here.

Yeah, it makes sense. And I agree with you that if America invades/attacks it will be the opposite (though the Cubans might not have a choice in the matter then).

I honestly can't think of a realistic scenario for war between Cuba and the US.

                  • I agree that it's a tenuous scenario. I wouldn't be surprised to see a few Cuban regulars in any Gran Colombian war, on the other hand.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

You think Raul is solid enough to get involved in a proxy war?

Ecuador Was In Talks For Hostages Before Colombia Attacked

Ecuador's President, Rafael Correa, has revealed that he was close to securing new hostage releases with FARC, even including the most famed hostage, Ingrid Betancourt, before Colombia's Israeli-style strike killed the FARC's chief negotiator in Ecuadorian territory, violating its sovereignty and international law.

                        The Associated Press
                        updated 7:22 p.m. PT, Mon., March. 3, 2008

QUITO, Ecuador - Ecuador's president said Monday that his government was in "very advanced" talks with Colombian rebels to free 12 hostages, including former presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt and three U.S. contractors, but was thwarted by a military raid.

President Rafael Correa said a Colombian strike on Ecuadorean soil Saturday that killed rebel leader Raul Reyes and 19 other rebels spoiled the plan to free the hostages held by the leftist Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC.

"I'm sorry to inform you that the talks were rather advanced to liberate 12 hostages, among them Ingrid Betancourt, in Ecuador," Correa said.

"Everything was foiled by the hands of the warmongers and authoritarians," Correa said, referring to the Colombian government.

The FARC has demanded creation of a safe zone in Colombia to negotiate a swap of some 40 high-value captives, including the French-Colombian Betancourt and three U.S. defense contractors whose plane went down in rebel territory, for hundreds of imprisoned guerrillas.
