Hey Lookie! Bush has another out! When folks started asking questions about our galant local allies in Afghanistan what did Bush do? He invaded Iraq! A quick victory Venezuala now would distract people from Iraq and sweep John McCain into the White House. We can do it, I know we can. Everybody get ready for a little bit of that "mission accomplished" magic. It's "shock and awe" time!

If Columbia can't control it's own population why should they have the right to invade their neighbors?Originally posted by DinoDoc
If Ecuador lacks the ability to control its territory and keep foreign influences out or worse if the evidence found at the base and they are supporting them pans out, why shouldn't Columbia be able to attack FARC bases?I drank beer. I like beer. I still like beer. ... Do you like beer Senator?

This is not proper form for relations between states. There are channels to go through before violating sovereignty - the UN, etc. If Uribe had the goods on Ecuador sheltering FARC, he should've gone to the international community with them.
if they apologize profusely won't that provide more incentive for FARC to continue sheltering in neighboring countries?
As I was saying, the fact that Lula sided with Ecuador/Venezuela is indicative of this."Beware of the man who works hard to learn something, learns it, and finds himself no wiser than before. He is full of murderous resentment of people who are ignorant without having come by their ignorance the hard way. "

Actually, from what I have read, Colombia already apologized. But it was refused.Originally posted by Geronimo
Apologizing is the last thing Columbia should do.I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Both have to back down. Brazil doesn't rule Colombia.Originally posted by Ramo
Looks like Lula has demanded an apology from Uribe (which wasn't a given IMO). The OAS can retaliate, i.e. through sanctions, if they feel that Colombia is out of line."Beware of the man who works hard to learn something, learns it, and finds himself no wiser than before. Of course because it wasn't a real apology. They justified the action. Real apology says you made a mistake and you won't repeat the action. That's the only kind of apology that should be accepted. What kind of Ecuadorian would accept anything less?Originally posted by DanS

How would the OAS go about this? I've never heard of it happening before, so am not familiar with how this process would work.Originally posted by Ramo

As far as I know the OAS is a complete joke with no power. It's just a photo op for politicians and serves no useful purpose.Try http://wordforge.net/index.php for discussion and debate.

It provides a forum to figure out a common course of action. I'm not referring to any independent powers that it has (although this sort of thing falls within the scope of its charter). My only point is that the other powers in the region are not merely spectators."Beware of the man who works hard to learn something, learns it, and finds himself no wiser than before. He is full of murderous resentment of people who are ignorant without having come by their ignorance the hard way. "

There is not going to be a war over this. What there will be is a lot of recrimination over the next few months, with the US squarely supporting Uribe as always, and general opinion in the rest of latin America generally split.
What is most interesting is the way the Colombian National Police chief keeps running his mouth making accusations. Lets see if he really has the goods. If you don't like reality, change it! me
