The 1986 Stanley Cup Finals were played from May 16 to May 24, 1986 between the Calgary Flames in their first Finals appearance and the Montreal Canadiens in their 32nd. The Canadiens would win the best-of-seven series four games to one, to win their 23rd Stanley Cup.

"After the goal was called back, the Canucks and Flames went to overtime where they lost their 7th game, on a goal by Trevor Linden and the Canucks advanced. The high hopes to return to the cup finals after their previous appearance in 1986 against Montreal were dashed, and they would not return again until nearly 20 years later against the Tampa Bay Lightning, where they would lose once again."

Most of Montreal's appearances were in the 6-team league.

How many finals have Montreal been in since Calgary had a team? 3?

Calgary also had to play Edmonton a lot back when they were the dynasty with Gretzky, which limited more Finals appearances.

At least our cup run in '94 was legitimate and we lost to a good team. Without that goal, you guys wouldn't have even made it out of the first round.

Losing to Tampa Bay was shameful. Edmonton played better then you did, and I know I sure enjoyed watching their run. I will give you '86 though. It took a rookie Patrick Roy to defeat you.

Without fact checking, nearly a dozen have been played since the expansion era started.

Yeah, I think 3 is the number. Same number as the Flames, but with 1 extra cup.

There were some tough teams in the east as well. The early 80's Islanders, Cam Neely's Bruins, Mario Lemieux's Penguins, and so on.

You mean investment of billions of $$$ in tech that your counterpart knows how to deal with? B-2 and F-117 might be good for crushing an air defences of countries like Iraq, but try to send them vs. Russian S-300 or S-400 SAMs and you'll see how many of them return to their bases.
