    • So Pinoy comes from the last syllable of "Philippines" plus a gender suffix. Interesting.

I couldn't agree more with you VetLegion. Let's storm NORAD and kick the crap out of it! Bloody computers think they can tell US what to do, eh? Eh?

      • Wasn't NORAD done away with in the 90s?

That's what the people who faked the Moon landing and who conspired with the CIA to kill JFK want you to believe*.

          • My sources tell me that NORAD is still very much operational, albeit in a smaller scale...

At the end of the Cold War NORAD reassessed its mission. To avoid cutbacks, from 1989 NORAD operations expanded to cover counter-drug operations, especially the tracking of small aircraft. But the DEW line sites were still replaced, in a scaled-back fashion by the North Warning System radars between 1986 and 1995. The Cheyenne Mountain site was also upgraded. However, none of the proposed OTH-B radars are currently in operation.

            Post-September 11, 2001 attacks

After the September 11, 2001 attacks, the NORAD mission evolved to include monitoring of all aircraft flying in the interior of the United States. NORAD oversees Operation Noble Eagle using fighter aircraft Combat Air Patrols (CAP) under command of First Air Force and Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) E-3 Sentry aircraft under command of the 552nd Air Control Wing. At U.S. request, NATO deployed five of its NATO AWACS aircraft to the U.S. to help NORAD in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks.

On July 28, 2006, military officials announced that NORAD's day-to-day operations would be consolidated, for purposes of efficiency, in an ordinary building at Peterson Air Force Base in nearby Colorado Springs. The mountain will be kept only as a backup in "warm standby," though fully operational and staffed with support personnel should the need arise. NORAD officials stated that the same surveillance work can be continued without the security the facility provides. They emphasized that they are no longer concerned about a halt to their operations from an intercontinental nuclear attack.

Vas ist dis "salacot?" The Tagalog dictionary defines it thus:

Salacot refers to the peculiar broad-brimmed headgear, mostly conical in shape, worn by Filipinos as they work in the fields and the sea. Lacking words for it, salacot is already in Spanish and English dictionaries as filipinism, or words they borrowed from us.

                • That's tagalog the language of the north. Here they speak visayan, also known as Cebuano, Cebu being the cap of the Visayas region. The local dialect is Boholono.

A salacot here is the little building made of bamboo and nepa that's over by the dartboard. There's a good pic of that from this last Sunday. Bia and Jennifer are standing in the doorway. These take many forms from big luxury places to little hang out spots on the street. I've heard the word translated to 'waiting shack', but don't know how accurate that is.

Here's a pic from last Sunday, but no salacot in this one.

                      • Better salacot pic. That's Aunt Nina, Teresa's mother. When Dolores was dirt poor after her mother passed away Aunt Nina would feed her anytime and she will always have my eternal gratitude and welcome for it. Teresa and Dolores grew up together and are the closest of friends.

                        • When I said I wanted a pic of these two together I thought she was going to jump over the wall and Bia ran into the salacot. Finally when they saw that I wasn't going to budge off my outragous request they got together for a pic.
