On-topic: The fact is, McCain has never has to withstand the sustained media scrutiny that comes with being a presidential candidate (in 2000, he got the fawning attention the press likes to bestow on Don Quixotes every couple of elections). I think he, and we, are in for some very rude surprises.

Off-Topic: As a proud adopted Pennsylvanian I just want to point out, re the thread title, that Pennsylvania was the first big source of "black gold" in the U.S.; it was PA oil that made Rockefeller his fortune (although he refined it in Ohio). Ok, now carry on.

PS Who's suprised to see the media's love affair with McCain end now that he all but has the nomination?
      Not surprised at all.

Like clockwork, they brought out all the dirt now.

You have to admire the Republican spin machine. It can fabricate a message and get all their talking heads saying identical things on a moment's notice.
        Indeed. Most impressive.

I don't mind them blowing the dust off the ancient Lincoln Savings and Loan scandal...for what it's worth.

But the salacious speculation about the lady lobbyist is gutter journalism. The NY Times should be ashamed of itself.

I thought that the Keating 5 scandal would be more toxic. Hasn't turned out that way. Yet.

It's funny that the New York Times endorsed McCain in the GOP primary, even while it was sitting on this story.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

When it hurts him least (as most press is on Obama/Clinton)? Ben, I'm a McCain supporting moderate republican, and I can't see how this is 'like clockwork'...

This was one of the better possible times that negative McCain stories could break. After they would hurt him in any meaningful way in the primary, and with plenty of time for this to seem like old news before the general.

Not really, the last thing McCain needs is to become the media whipping boy in this election.

Not really. They could have gone the "no endorsement" route, but if they had to endorse somebody in that benighted GOP field, it was always going to be McCain; behavioral improprieties with a lobbyist, or even conflict-of-interest resulting from it, wasn't going to be enough to pust the NYT to one of the other bozos.

Which is why they were discussed in their decision to endorse McCain.

Most people if they are going to endorse someone they bring out the flaws then.

Ya, the NYT doesn't come out of this looking good (the NYT management probably wanted to sit on the story until after elections, just with the warrantless wiretapping stuff in 2004). It seems that what was happening was the reporters wanted to publish it months ago and the management kept on throwing obstacles in the way either out of general gutlessness or because of McCain's lawyers being on their ass.

But it's silly to think of this as a nefarious anti-McCain conspiracy, the NYT went pretty out of their way to suck up to McCain and they only printed the article when it looked like The New Republic would print an article that would make them look (deservedly) like idiots.

When the sentiment is that banal, does it count as plagiarism?

wait until they start actually talking about it.
