Apparently, the story is weak because the McCain camp has been lobbying the Times to not run the story since December 20th. The more juicy bits, presumably, have been lawyered out of the story, but may make there way back in over the coming days. The Times only broke the story to get a jump on the New Republic, and to prove that the Times doesn't always sit on stories like the NSA wiretapping story (written before 2004 election, broken in 2005).

Of course that doesn't stop Freeps et. al. from making this sound like a nefarious NYT conspiracy against everything they hold dear.

Oh and new Hillary video, not quite as entertaining as the others but this one's unofficial:
I STILL support Hillary Clinton for President and I believe that it is NOT too late for Hillary to win the democratic nomination. The delegates officially v...

Well if it was actually sourced the allegations of an affair (or at least had an admission from the lobbyist) and didn't read like an excuse to bring up the Keating 5 scandal again, I think they'd be inclined to treat it more seriously.

Unless there's more evidence coming, this seems like an attempt by the NYT to repeat the smear tactics that sunk McCain's first run because it seems like a non-story so far.

PS Who's suprised to see the media's love affair with McCain end now that he all but has the nomination?

You didn't miss much. late ****ing start. incredibly geriatric.

I much prefer her to Obama, but what a ineffectual campaign.

A more interesting take is that the Times decides to release this story when McCain wins the Republican primary, but the Dems are still fighting. Rumors (probably on right wing sites) are that some influential Dems wanted the Times to halt the story until it could be more useful.

The key source appears to be John Weaver, who isn't exactly a nobody in McCain's career. He didn't mention an affair specifically, but was referring to something he thought to be clearly improper (such as trading favors for her clients). But due to the vaguery of the entire story (the juice seems to have been lawyered out of the article), this isn't a big deal yet.

Separately, a top McCain aide met with Ms. Iseman at Union Station in Washington to ask her to stay away from the senator. John Weaver, a former top strategist and now an informal campaign adviser, said in an e-mail message that he arranged the meeting after “a discussion among the campaign leadership” about her.

“Our political messaging during that time period centered around taking on the special interests and placing the nation’s interests before either personal or special interest,” Mr. Weaver continued. “Ms. Iseman’s involvement in the campaign, it was felt by us, could undermine that effort.”

Mr. Weaver added that the brief conversation was only about “her conduct and what she allegedly had told people, which made its way back to us.” He declined to elaborate.

They leaked it because TNR was about to write an article about their keeping mum. TNR, in its blog, has confirmed this.

On the Dem side, Obama just won another primary 2:1 - Dems Abroad. His pledged delegate lead should be past 160 at this point.

I know, but the theory is the reasons for the mum keeping.

Well, the McCain camp had been desperately begging the Times to keep a lid on it since December. I'd assume both the delay and the apparent vacuity of the article are due to his campaign's efforts.

From the perspective of a Dem partisan, there are plenty of better times to have released the story - before NH, SC, or FL, after McCain wraps up all the delegates he needs, after the convention, or a week before the election.

If there's nothing more to the story than what's been published so far, the Times did McCain and the GOP a huge favor (since McCain had no margin for error in January).

Well, I guess the right may rally around the fact that the "liberal media" is attacking him. I do think that deep down a lot of people on the right disliked him a bit for all the positive press he kept getting, considering their views on the media.

They could also pull out the persecution complex by the media while Obama gets sanctified and treated with kid gloves by them type of thing (us vs. the world).

Didn't he just do that by winning Wisconsin?

I should add that his non-denial denial makes an awfully strange assertion:

He has never violated the public trust, never done favors for special interests or lobbyists
Which is demonstrably false (Keating 5), and is an utterly ridiculous thing for a major politician to say. Of course they do favors for special interests; McCain just gave the press an excuse to look for some and publish stories on it. Pumpkinhead et al. love nothing more than a politician making easily refutable assertions. That was just dumb.
