Btw, just because colonalism was racist doesn't mean its overall effect can't be good.

Theoretically, yes. Some places did quite well with colonization . . . like America . . . after we exterminated the original population.

BTW a couple of posters seem to have the wrong impression. I'm not advocating a return to colonialism but I do want to look at the real historical impacts from both positive and negative points of view. During the first half of the 20th century the dominant view was that colonialism was undoubtedly beneficial to all involved (abet not equally) while in the second half of the 20th century the dominant view was that colonialism was evil with no redeeming value.

I honestly believe the truth lies some where in the middle which is why I posted this thread. Some people, though, can't seem to get beyond their knee jerk reactions or entrenched political positions. I hope we can all avoid that in the future.

If you had started with Asia, you would have been on much firmer ground making that statement, but you started with Africa, and specifically the Congo, which was the first genocide of a century of genocide. That would be like talking about how America benefited the Indians.

As much as Koreans hated the Japanese colonial period, and trust me these guys take it to an Irish-English level of hate sometimes, some of the Koreans will actually admit that the Japanese colonialism actually helped develop the country greats. Building railroads, ports, roads, factories, mines, etc...

That doesn't mean they want the Japanese back but it does mean that the truth lays some where in between the Colonialism = evil and the savages need whitey sides. I think most of the best parts of colonialism (I.E. development and increased trade) can be reproduced via free trade and private investment while the worst parts (foreign political domination, etc) are avoided.

I didn't start with Congo. Time Magazine did and I just posted the article and asked the question. Please learn that quoted authors are not me and I speak for myself not for them or vis versa.

Except all that infrastructure was destroyed in the Korean Civil War.

I think that's pretty obvious. Similar arguments can be made for almost any "bad" periods in history - Stalin built up Russian industry, teh pharaohs built pyramids, etc.

No, there still would have been a world war, even without him. Now the person who designed the stuka dive bomber? take him out of the equation and you place the history channel into serious jeopardy.

Be careful, Whoha. Tiamat has been dumping scalding coffee on a lot of Whohas lately. Be afraid. Be very afraid.
