When it comes down the actual election, the RR's can be bought off with just words and no actions. They are such suckers in the long run. Just say family values and they will fall into line... knowing damn well they aren't going to vote for some bleeding heart liberal democrat.

I think they believe that it'll get the Republicans to actually take them seriously. One horrible election loss and the Republicans would realize how bad it'll be if they ignore the far right.

How would it be far worse? We would be choosing between honest liberals and stealth liberals in that case.

Given that option, I would vote the honest liberals every time (and on that note, Obama over Clinton every time).

People complain about the two parties looking the same all the time, but when conservatives fight for a choice that's actually different than the Democrat offerings, we get blasted for splitting the party. Why is that?

That's the point. The Religious Right would be telling the rest of the party that they need the RR to win. And they'd have to deal with the horrors of 4 years of Obama or Clinton to let that lesson sink in.

If so many people have this sort of attitude why is there no support for converting to a parliamentary system? It's like they enjoy banging their heads against the wall instead of actually supporting sweeping changes that would deal with it. Hell, we can't even get most of them to support instant run off voting. it's bizarre.

I long for the day when the religious right voting demographic group becomes seriously weakened.

One of reasons why I'm a straight-party (Democratic) voter is that in spite of more secular Republicans such as Guiliani and McCain, I can't shake my perception that Republican party as a whole still has too strong of ties with an extremist demographic group (religious right voters).

Until enough secular Republicans can come out in favor of equal rights for gays and lesbians, without being scared like chickens of angering religious right, there is no viable choice of a Republican candidate for me.

I'm sure most haven't really heard of instant run-off voting or had it presented to them as a serious option. I see no good reason for them, or anyone, to really oppose it. I can see many downsides to a parliamentary system, but IRV just seems obvious. Give it time.
