Let em whine all they want. If McCain gets the nod, they have to vote for him. Their only choice will be to vote for him or stay home and not vote. And that could mean that one of two people they are afraid of even more could get the WH... so screw em. Let em whine

          I agree . . . .

I have to grudgingly admit that Romney is the most handsome of the candidates of both sides.

I doubt you can find an example of the "extreme right" complaining that McCain will instill fiscal discipline.

Well, there is the social programs. Huckabee's tend to be ones that focus on getting people to eventually be tax payers. I guess you can call conservative views on this to be no social programs and liberal views to be programs that cover absolutely everyone. Huckabee would be moderate.

Thats my take too-- I know the fear for the party is that if they don't appeal to the right, a lot of those voters WILL stay home-- not eneough differentiation between the candidates.

But it still strikes me that McCain HAS to appeal to the right more than Obama or Clinton but yet has much greater appeal to moderates than Romney or Huckabee

Pat Robertson made an interesting prediction. He says if the Republicans put forth a McCain-Huckabee ticket, the Right will respond with a 3rd-Party candidate.

On that definition I would hope everyone would be a moderate or a liberal ( depending on what you mean by "cover absolutely everyone")-- many good programs do "cover" everyone -

Interesting "threat"... but not a meaningful one. If the religious right were to do that, they would pretty much guarantee the election of the democrat... and either one of them scares the RR more than McCain does.

So they will make funny noises, and try to talk a good game... but at the end of the day, they really have no choice. AND IT'S ABOUT TIME the moderates took back control of the Repub party.

If the Republican Party actually promoted traditional Republican ideals, they could replace the extremists with crossover moderate Dems and small-government liberals. Why do they not see this?

That wouldn't make sense though. The Religious Right supports Huckabee. So why would they revolt from a McCain-Huckabee ticket? Unless putting Huckabee as VP just isnt' enough of a bone for them, but then they are just being greedy.

The folks who would be pissed would be the Lou Dobbs Wall Street type crowd. But those folks aren't really given to dramatic Don Quixite moves. So I'd think the only real shot we'd have at seeing a real sizeable third-party split is if McCain picks Rudy for VP. That would piss off the religious right enough to bolt (potentially). The Lou Dobbs crowd would just vote for McCain and whine about it. The RR would be seriously pissed.

So I think giving Huckabee the VP would neutralize that threat and strengthen support in the South.

I'm hoping for a split though. I want to see things get shook up.

A lot of the religious right also seems to be big into tax cutting. Thinking of it in terms of "moral" terms rather than economic.
