  • I am by no means a Hillary-hater, but if she wins the nomination in spite of losing the popular vote I will not be voting for anyone in November.

At least, that is what I would like to tell myself. It's comforting to think that I would abstain out of principle. In reality, I would probably vote for Clinton anyway, because even if I find her campaigning abhorrent I know McCain would be a far worse president. Better to vote for the anti-democratic candidate than the anti-democratic party.

    • Ah, but the Republican Party hates McCain, you remember? What better way to stick it to them than to elect a president they hate - but are forced to 'support' anyway... and as a bonus he's not a crackpot religious nut and happens to oppose corruption and support campaign reform ...

      • While that is true, just because the right-wingers hate him doesn't mean I can't dislike him too.

If I were forced to vote for a Republican, it might well be him - I agree with his stands on torture and campaign finance reform. I respect his ability to stand up for what he believes in - not always, but more than many politicians do. In most ways, however, I don't see any indication that his policies would be substantively different from those of the present administration, and "100 years in Iraq" is a dealbreaker for me. I can't in good conscience vote for anyone who wants to keep more than a token presence in Iraq. It's hard enough being willing to vote for someone who authorized it (Hillary).

Now the question becomes what if she loses the popular vote, but wins the delegates (without the superdelegates included), due to big wins in Ohio, Penn, and Texas (not saying she will, but what if)?

            What then?

                • Gentlemen, why all the vitriol? Ultimately, this Clinton vs. Obama debate is academic.

We all know that the Dems will crap the bed in the general election. A leopard does not change its spots. And while these two candidates may be more politcally savvy than the last Dem candidates (damning with faint praise, I know), the Democratic Party itself is still utterly gutless and profoundly ****ed. Clinton getting the nom based on superdelegates would only be the surest way to facilitate a McCain Administration; the jackasses would surely find a way to fumble an Obama campaign as well.

                  • It is hard not to be cynical about the Dems. I've always thought Hillary would be a sure fire disaster and I have to agree, despite Obama's appeal they will screw that up too. I'm expecting a McCain presidency.

                    • Something I found on another forum that made me laugh:

According to rumor, a single tear from Obama's cheek can slay demons and cure vitiligo and impetigo. His stride is as of a titan's, seven leagues at a time, and while he holds a microphone in his hand he canst take no mortal wound wound nor shed a single drop of his own blood. He speaks the native tongue of birds, and converses happily with all beasts of hoof and paw, even to the lowliest vole and marmot. Gracious as the kings of old, Obama carries no money nor answers unkind word with like. Peonies spring up where his feet trod, and were he to lay his weary head upon the ground a mighty cedar, like unto the old father trees of Bsharri and Barouk, would spring forth to shade his noble brow. In the elven tongue he is Lothlornienel, with means "Laughter in the High Places", and the dwarves call him earthfriend, as well as "Khazad ak Manu", which means "He who does not wear patriotic lapel pins." His is the drill that shall pierce the heavens: believe in him believing in you! The Neocons speak of him in hushed tones in their shadowed, dusty halls, and refer to the ancient scrolls of the fallen empire of Mnem, which foretells of the coming of the Dusky Childe, who shall scourge their number from the halls and rotundas and tear down the altars in the high places and bring the three terrible plagues of Health Care and White Guilt and Political Transparency. They say that he will travel to Shibboleth, where the heart of Karl Rove is kept, inanimate, inside a Canopic jar and breaks the seals and feast upon the contents therin: and with the power thus consumed he will erect a throne of jade and jasper and lapus lazuli, and rule upon it, and the thunderous gnashing of teeth from the Red States will play Hail to the Chief as he ascends the dais

                      • Tuesday is the Wisconsin Primary. I can vote for any candidate, however, I will NOT vote for Obama (because he wants to set a withdrawl timeline against military recomendation and because he want to cut the Space budget. Both of these issues are important enough to me to eliminate him as a candidate for me) or Huckabee (wants an amendment to ban gay marriage and I just can't say his name without laughing), so I guess you have to convince me betweem Hillary and John.

                        You have till Tuesday.

                        • Obama has always said he reserves the right to stay longer in Iraq if he deems it necessary. Time tables are goals not strict mandates, though many Dems want them to be if a Republican is the Prez. A Dem for president would probably be given more flexibility by Congress in dealing with Iraq then a Republican and that should result in a better outcome especially considering his greater for-sight on the issue in the first place.

The space program is (short of Iraq) simply the most outrageous boon-dongle were running. I don't see how anyone Rep or Dem can want us to keep throwing money into that hole when their are far better things to spend it on. When technology has advanced to the point that a moon base or mission to mars is reasonable I'd support an international co-op mission to do it but not at the present insane cost.

                          • At this point it is no longer cost effective to have significant governmental expenditures in space beyond NEO. There is enough interest/capital in the private sector to allow continued innovation in space technology, without governmental involvement. Anyways, I don't see a real problem with China getting its space exploration on, so it's not like we as a species would be abandoning space.

Insane cost? It's a minuscule part of the US budget. The money hole is interest on the debt, not the relatively minor space program.

                              • To be honest, when we have facilities bulit (like my lab) that don't run for months because of not having enough money to power the beam... that is a far greater loss of opportunity and resources then the space program.

(so we can't run experiments because of lacking money to run the beam, but our science is important so we have full funding to expand the facility for the next couple decades)
