Actually Lee-Jackson Day has been around longer than Martin Luther King Day. Virginia began celebrating Lee's birthday in 1894, then added Jackson in 1904.

I suspected that was the case. I don't see why folks in Virginia shouldn't celebrate Lee-Jackson day AND MLK day, but I'm sure folks outside of Virginia should get to decide what is important and what is not.

I get similar stares when I tell Americans, yes we have a day off to celebrate the queen. No, it's not for the current Queen, but a dead one.

Victoria day isn't as bad actually. Queen Victoria signed and nominally drafted the documents that converted Canada from a mere colony to a budding nation state. She also (mainly passively) reigned during the transfer of nearly all remaining political power from the monarchy to the elected government in the UK. If King George and his Parliament had behaved as Victoria and her Parliament did it is likely the US never would have resorted to war to meet their demands.
