In response to the OP, I defied the supposed recession and bought a business today on a whim. I have now dedicated my entire weekend to organizing and taking inventory, which will then be followed by legal and financial crap and some intense marketing. This is going to be really fun!!
In the beginning the Universe was created. This made a lot of people very angry and has been widely regarded as a bad move. - Douglas Adams
Today which is Saturday here, I have done nothing but civ, greet some guests, watch a two your old girl play at dancing, and BSed a bit on Poly.
Tomorrow we go to the beach, then Dolores will go on in the afternoon to shop in Tagbilaran. They have a raffle at the market that we go shopping at and are giving away a car which Dolores expects to win. She won a small basket with some canned food in it once. I'm not going, I'll hang out at the beach until they return. Bring a book, watch the tide come in, do some snorkleing, sleep a bit, have a few drinks.

Ah. I hate those things too. But why is celebrating MLK day an illustration of them? Surely, marking a symbol of teh ending of segregation in a non-violent way is on par, in a nation's collective consciousness, with, say, honouring veterans. I guess one might counterargue that racial equality before teh law is a silly example of political correctness gone far, but that would be a difficult argument to make.
Admittedly, you and I, as teh only non-Americans in teh thread, are probably least qualified to discuss teh validity or meaning of this holiday to Americans (to whom teh OP's question was posed), but this is Poly, so that gives us license.
Ah, there's been a slight misunderstanding here. My beef is not with Martin Luther King Day at all. I think that's a very appropriate day to mark. I was talking about the joke made at the gathering in Denver, CO (to the effect that if Barrack Obama got elected President, they'd have to change the White House), not the holiday.
You might say that bringing that up was off topic to this thread, strictly speaking, but then I've not known you to be an overly strict speaker on those things in the past. Eh?
No, Martin Luther King Day is an important day to celebrate, for the reasons you already gave - and others as well. And God bless the President who created it a national holiday back in 1983. <- obligatory remark

That would be Congressman John Conyers, who introduced the bill in 1968. Ronnie just signed it into law.

Yes, I will accept that as a correct answer.

Really? You think that Buchanan, the guy who had the conn as the country imploded, had a better administration than Bush?
Wow, you're one pampered bourgeois individual.
Grant = Bush now?

What possible good was anything that Jackson or Lee did for the people of Virginia?
Why don't you ask them? Seems the folks in Virginia honour the both of them, one of whom gave up his life.
I would think you'd only honor folks whose actions made a positive difference or at least whose goals would have made a positive difference if realized. Do the counties involved make any effort to justify honoring these two men?
IOW, just because I disagree with the holiday means I should get to tell people what days they can or cannot celebrate.
I suppose you'll be telling us Canadians next that we shouldn't celebrate Victoria Day in honour of Queen Vicky.

Being in charge when bad things happen isn't the same as having a bad administration. A lot of good things for the U.S. happened under Reagan's watch, but that doesn't mean Reagan's administration was a great one. It was particularly corrupt. I like Ann Richards comment, most folks join an administration expecting to serve 4 to 8 years. Most of the ones appointed by Reagan are serving ten to twenty.
Perhaps I was unclear in that I was referring to political corruption. I'm having a problem with incomplete thoughts due to the medication.
