Faraday's notebook scribble, "Desmond is my constant," rang a vague bell...
Therefore, Desmond = 9.64853e4 coulombs / mole of electrons... ?
OK, that's goofy. But...
Then I noted that Desmond's surname is Hume (Scottish philospoher). I went to the first Google result (philosophypages.com), which started with this sentence:
Locke??? WTF! I don't have time to delve into it right now (and I assume the fansites noticed this long ago), but there seems to be some sort of linkage here... scientists and philosophers...
Ben Linus >> Linus Pauling??
I truly doubt that I'm onto something here -- probably just another facile "sounds cool to me" naming convention by the writers. But still, it's mildly interesting, even though none of the other character names jumps out at me.
OK, done meandering. Back to work.
Faraday's constant is the charge carried by one mole of electrons.
There are 6.02214e23 electrons per mole of electrons. (Avogadro's number).
Each electron has a charge of 1.602177e-19 coulombs per electron.
So Faraday's constant is 1.602177e-19 coulombs per electron * 6.02214e23 electrons per mole of electrons = 9.64853e4 coulombs / mole of electrons.

Later in eighteenth century, Scottish philosopher David Hume sought to develop more fully the consequences of Locke's cautious empiricism by applying the scientific methods of observation to a study of human nature itself.
