Short and simple: The Law is given to tell us what is sin, ie crime against God. In the Old Testament God tells us what is sin and what is the result of sin. Which is death. Now, no human can keep the Law all his/her life, and God's word tells us to break one piece of the Law is to break them all. So them we're, well, doomed. But God is loving us and sent himself in human flesh to fullfill the requirements for salvation and himself suffering the judgement of sin, so that we, by accepting his offer(ie becoming a follower of Christ), become saved and can get eternal life with him.
