Animists would care. Taking holy stones, and the divinities within them, and defiling them with Moby-blood. What were you thinking?

Fr. Daniel Byantoro, who started the Orthodox Church in Indonesia basically from scratch, had similar problems with death threats for apostasy. He got out of it by paying a substantial sum of money to the Islamist groups threatening them. Remember, kids: money washes away *all* sin, not just the medieval Catholic kind!

But really, that is not the topic of this thread.
This is an honest question: In what way was that made moot by Jesus' sacrifice?

          That´s it.
More important than what is included in holy scriptures is,if the Believers apply sanity and reason to the things they practise, or if they just follow literally everything that is written down therein.

Condemning or even killing people (or letting them die) just because some religious laws dictate it is despicable, no matter if it is done by christians, muslims or followers of another religion.

Nowadays it is de facto mostly muslims and not christians who practise their religion this way. However I also wouldn´t like to live in some kind of Christistan, which is ruled by fundamentalist christians

              DEATH PENALTY FOR APOSTASY REBELLION

One can accept Islam freely, but one cannot give it up with the same freedom. The punishment for apostasy-for giving up Islam-is death, though not by burning. “Once a group of men apostatized from Islam. ’Ali burnt them to death. When Ibn ’AbbAs heard about it, he said: If I had been in his place, I would have put them to sword for I have heard the apostle say, Kill an apostate but do not burn him for Fire is Allah’s agency for punishing the sinners” (TirmizI, vol. I, 1357).2

Eight men of the tribe of ’Ukl became Muslims and emigrated to Medina. The climate of Medina did not suit them. Muhammad allowed them “to go to the camels of sadaqa and drink their milk and urine” (urine was considered curative). Away from the control of the Prophet, they killed the shepherds, took the camels and turned away from Islam. The Prophet sent twenty ansArs after them with an expert tracker who could follow their footprints. The apostates were brought back. “He [the Holy Prophet] got their hands cut off, and their feet, and put out their eyes, and threw them on the stony ground until they died” (4130). Another hadIs adds that while on the stony ground “they were asking for water, but they were not given water” (4132).

The translator gives us the verse from the QurAn according to which these men were punished: “The just recompense for those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and strive to make mischief in the land is that they should be murdered, or crucified or their hands and their feet should be cut off on opposite sides, or they should be exiled” (QurAn 5:36).

2Abu Huraira tells us: “The Apostle sent us on a raiding mission. He commanded us to burn two men of the Quraish if we encountered them. He gave us their names. But when we went to him to take his leave, he said, ‘Don’t burn them in fire but put them to sword, for to torture by fire is Allah’s prerogative’ ” (SahIh BukhArI SharIf, sahIh, 1219).
All other references are Hadis numbers from the Sahih Muslim.

Persecute the bastards who issue threats like this in the furthest extent of the law. Or even make laws for such cases.

BTW Could we make a safe-house system for such converts similar to the one for abused women?

I've known ex-Christians thrown out of their homes and disowned and beaten by their parents for being apostates.
Christianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree...

                            2) Did they want to kill them?
                            3) Were the clerics in favour of killing them?

Why do I think the only reason you care, Nikolai, is because this involves Christianity?

I don't see you post threads about Christians persecuting Muslims and gays, but that happens with great frequency.
"The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."

this is only partly true. Christians do not kill their apostates, nor do they kill gays. Teh West likes to lash Christianity for it mistakes, but every criticism of another religion, even if it's much more faulty, brings a knee-jerk "we should be discussing about how horrible christianity is!!!" reaction.
