No they aren't or rather most aren't; you are thinking of Chaldeans who are a subgroup of Assyrians. The Assyrian Christians are decended from the ancient Syriac church which pre-dates most of the creation of Roman Catholic Church and has many rites and practices which western churches consider heretical or incorrect. Skipping over 1300 years of Assyrian history including some interesting stuff about how they got a lot of support from Pre-Islamic Persia's government; after Islam spread through the middle east the Assyrians traditionally looked to the Byzantines to promote their interests and be a voice for Christians living in lands Muslims had conquered. After Constantinople fell some Assyrians felt they should reach out to the Pope in Rome while others felt they should relay on Assyrian unity.

The short story is the Pope said he'd only help them if they agreed to recognize Papal Supremacy & enter communion with Rome. In return the Pope would allow them to keep practicing their traditional eastern rites. Most Assyrians rejected this and remained outside of communion with Roman & to this day refuse to accept Papal Supremacy. A minority of Assyrians did agree and they renamed themselves Chaldeans.

No they aren't or rather most aren't; you are thinking of Chaldeans who are a subgroup of Assyrians. The Assyrian Christians are decended from the ancient Syriac church which pre-dates most of the formal creation of roman Catholic Church and has many rites and practices which western churches consider heretical or incorrect.

First off.

1. There is no 'formal creation of the Roman Catholic church'. The church began with Christ. Therefore there cannot be churches in the east that predate the Catholic church. If you are going to say this then you need to show when you believe the 'Catholic church' started.

2. Yes, there are a variety of eastern Christians. Some left after Nicaea, but the Council of Chalcedon in 431 was especially divisive. They are in essence three groups in the east.

First there are the Nestorians. They believed that Christ had two independent personalities, one human and one divine. Then you have the Monophysites who believed that Christ only had one nature. Chalcedon stated two things, that Christ has only one personality but two natures, that he is both man and God at the same time.

The result in 431 lead to a great schism of most of the eastern catholics, especially in Antioch and Alexandria from Rome. Now this was least helpful wrt to the Persians, who managed to overrun the Roman empire in the east until checked by Heracletius. He defeated them and marched from Assyria south to Ctesphon, and finally forced a mutual peace. 20 years later the Persians were overrun by the Moslems and then so were the Christians in the East, at least those in what is now Syria, Israel, and Egypt. Especially hard hit were the Nestorians and the Monophysites.

They had long been subjugated under the Moslems. You have to understand that the split between the monophysites, and the nestorians from the Catholic church came before the creation of the Eastern Orthodox split, and what they call the Great Schism in 1100. This was some 500 years prior. They were out of communion from both the Orthodox and the Catholics at this period.

Yes, some have accepted, some have not, some chose the orthodox, but the divisions here are the longest standing in Christianity.
