Clearly, the tazer was used only because the cop is an idiot who had no arguments other than "He didn't follow my instructions" (the line he repeated about two dozens of times, beside "Get into the car"). There was absolutely no reason for the tazer to be used. Nobody was threatened, the guy was pretty much emotionless, simply not agreeing with the cop. And even if he got off, the police had his data and licence plate, so if he had done it, he'd be in big trouble.
Some US cops seem to think a tazer is a tool to be used in every situation that doesn't fit ideal test conditions.

I can't hear those "haha, dumb college boy, should have known better" comments anymore. No threat, no force, this should be common ground.
I can't believe that the guy actually was jailed. It really seems you have no better way to waste tax money.

wow -- This one is actually worse than the Canadian airport one in some ways. The guy didn't do anything but speed (perhaps) and if it is an offence to not sign a ticket, I would think that a police officer would tell people that.

At least the guy didn't die-- so while it appears the police use of force was unnecessary, at least it did not result in tragic consequences

This officer needs, at the very least, a bit of training on non-confrontational methods of dealing with people. At most, he needs another career.

Definately. I've not seen the video, but the guy who got tased was a right nob jockey, and deserves most things that happens to him. But tasering was just a step too far imo. Might even have been better to pull a gun on him, then he would have seen the lethal threat and acted accordingly (and if he turns his back then pull out the taser).

After thinking this through, apart from the...abusive/rude/forthright manner in which the copper spoke, and not saying that the tased guy was under arrest, I can't fault him. If the guy is allowed to walk away under those circumstances, he has to be stopped. He can't be taken down in any other way without too much risk to the officer without use of the taser, and if the officer knows that the guy will fall away from the road, then I applaud him for having enough courage to pull the trigger.

I hope though, that the lessons this episode teaches are learnt by both sides though. Stop being abusive *****es and be polite.

I think I missed the part where the guy was impolite.

Could have shot him, tossed a thrown down weapon next to the guy and had none of this problem.
Instead, he lit up the guy's life a little.

                        • OK, watched the vid. The guy in the car refused to hand over his driving licence at first, he had to be asked at least 3 times. When he refused to sign, I think the officer was perfectly polite when he asked him to get out of the car. The officer drew his taser very quickly, which is an aggressive move, but justified as he is alone. IF the guy has not put his hand on his pocket, or had started to walk back to his car he would have been fine. As it was he deliberately ignored the spoken warnings. For all the officer knew he could have been going to get a weapon, or he could have been about to pull a weapon out of his pocket.

Yes, the police officer could have been a bit better, but if anything the video portrayed the officer as more polite than he was being made out to be here. the guy was a complete doofus in acting like a smart alec, which is the wrong thing to do in this circumstance. Even if he didn't sign, and had carried on talking while being arrested, he would have been OK. AS it was, it was his actions that forced the officer to fire.

                              1) I don't think the fact that the victim put his hands in his pockets caused the cop to taser him. The cop already intended to fire the weapon.
