  • Ok, so your point is that ignoring the cop was the proper attitude? You go ahead and try it. I doubt even where you live that you'd get away with it.
Watch the video. The guy was being calm while the officer was being aggressive. The bloke's questions were entirely reasonable and I can tell you from personal experience that if you ask reasonable questions in a reasonable manner of police officers in the UK they will tend to answer respectfully. British police officers are trained to deal with potentially difficult situations in a non-confrontational way.

I don't know if that's the same for American officers... if so this guy wasn't using his training. Either way, it was the officer in the wrong .

If this sort of thing happened in the UK there would be an uproar and it's gratifying to see that happening in the US too. I just wonder why there seem to be people like you who apparently would be so much happier living in 1930's Russia!

    • Bull****. The cop has more to do than argue with a jackass. Ditto for me, I'm going out.

      • Before I back out of the discussion, society is making it where a slap on the ass by a parent means a call to Child Protective Custody. A cop is screwed if he/she were to do similar.
Are you advocating a legal system that doesn't distinguish between children and adults?

Indeed he does.. that thing must go through batteries faster than a bisexual nun at an Ann Summers party.

Common sense unless you think arguing with the cop will make him change his mind instead of pissing him off.
It seems odd that you would be legally bound to add your signature to the ticket - that begs the question surely?

Nevertheless he surely has the right to question the officers actions?

So to sign is an admission of guilt, so he's exercising his right to due process by not doing so?

                    • Understood. Why does that require a signature as opposed to a summons? Is it a legal requirement to sign when the documents are presented?

Yes, he has the right to question the cops actions. In a court, and not at the roadside. He does not have the right to walk way from a cop when the cop is about to arrest him (and as Don stated, the cop doesn't have to say the guy is under arrest then and there. Could be after the guy had put his arms over his head the copper was planning on saying it then.
You just wasted six ... no, seven ... seconds of your life reading this sentence.

If what I was told is true, you don't have to sign. It's just that is handled by taking you before a magistrate, i.e. taking you to jail.

A promise is considered something of value. A signature is providing something of value. Just recieving a summons isn't.

                              Maybe I'm way off though.

You're absolutely right. The problem is that someone who makes that mistake doesn't deserve to be tasered. Especially by some dickweed with an attitude and a tiny pecker.
