Yes, you're right there's no similar problem here. Montreal would love to be part of a separate Quebec.

      • I am curious about the financial side of the problem. On the scale of the Canadian economy, is Quebec a net receiver or a net donor?

In Belgium, for instance, Wallonie is a net receiver. (Yet the Flanders well compensates what it gives to Wallonie by what it gets from Brussels, as one of the Belgians on this board recently explained.)

Actually, being an active nationalist minority, one is in a good position to bargain for better economic deals for himself. This is what happens in Russia, where Tatarstan and some other republics receive substantial economic preferences for their loyalty.

          • I think every province in Canada is a net receiver, except Alberta and Ontario.

Why Quebec is a chronic net receiver despite incredible natural resources is the issue.

The Liberals throw money at Quebec to try and regain seats from the Bloc, and the Conservatives throw money at Quebec to try and gain new seats. It's not a use of my tax dollars that I approve of. Unfortunately, the Conservatives had some success in Quebec during the last Federal election so they have incentive to continue.

Selling our electricity under the north American market price is one of the issue.

Subsidizing the making of Aluminum via low electricity price is also stupid. Which is practically exporting our electricity via Aluminum ingot.

Is that not what we called political market; and it's everywhere the same thing.

I hadn't run across the term "political market" before. It fits.

Yes it happens to some extent everywhere, but none of it ever seems to be directed at buying my vote.

                          About the natives:
We had a treaty some years ago with the Cree(signed by B. Landry) for our future hydro electrical development.

                          About Churchill Falls:
Poor Nfld! Really; It's sad for them.

That's the electricity we get from Churchill Falls which is in Labrador which the Brits stole from the French speaking Canadians to give to the English speaking Canadians.

The Natives had the James Bay Hydro projects stopped by the courts in early 1970s until they reached a settlement for Hydro development. They got lots of money. Then we flooded them.
                              What?
