Palpatine and Obi-Wan were wonderfully done
No, no they really weren't. And the lightsaber duel is irrelevant. Actually, no it's not. It's symptomatic of everything that's wrong with the "prequels." Special effects are everything, characters are secondary.

Ripley falling to certain death in a pit of fire or something with an alien popping out of her stomach. Worst... scene... ever.

The rest of the movie wasn't TOO bad.

The worst thing about Alien 3 was that it wasn't the end of the series.

The kicker is that Anakin comes with the long-term potential to be more powerful than Palpy. And Palpy is going to help him become so? That's not good for business.

Of course it is... look how loyal a servant Vader is until Palpatine overreaches and tries to kill Anakin's son?

Even if you buy that Palpy needs Anakin to take out the Jedi... Anakin is easily dispatched after his fight with Obi Wan. It's the dumbest move possible to save him.

But then helps to chase and destroy the Jedi (with the exception of Yoda and Kenobi) across the galaxy.

We both have a different interpretation on Palpy's power relative to the Jedis Yoda and Windu, but it seems that the book version (at least according to wiki), seems to back my POV in some respects (ie, the battle with Yoda):

The Databank explains that the Force "granted him inhuman dexterity and speed, agility enough to quickly kill three Jedi Masters" in seconds.[1] Palpatine is a master lightsaber combatant and skilled at using Force lightning to attack his opponents.[1] Stover elaborates on the duel between Palpatine and Yoda: "From the shadow of a black wing, a small weapon ... slid into a withered hand and spat a flame-colored blade[.] When the blades met it was more than Yoda against Palpatine, more the millennia of Sith against the legions of Jedi; this was the expression of the fundamental conflict of the universe itself. Light against dark. Winner take all."[40] During the duel, Yoda realizes, "He had lost before he started."[41]

                      (Stover being the author)

And as Yoda is the more conspicuous Jedi Master, I think we are led to believe that he is the most powerful Jedi as well. Regardless of Windu's talents.

                      [q=Arrian]No, no they really weren't.[/q]

Yes, yes they were . Palpatine in ROTS was as badass as Vader in ESB.

But if Palpatine is so badass... he doesn't need that help. He's already beat Yoda and Mace... and Anakin has killed most of the other Jedi. (In the movie they make it seem like Yoda and Obi Wan are the only 2 left by the end).

Palpatine has lots of other servants... why keep the only one who could dethrone you? Just isn't smart.

The books are irrelevent when judging the characters' portrayal within the movie.

Uh... Palpatine was almost comic at times. The laughter in the fights was more clownish than evil, as were his "oh ****" reactions. (Like when Yoda flings the senate seat at him.) Vader was never relegated to comic relief.

I'd agree that Obi Wan was decently well done.

In addition to being Galactic Chancellor and his own 'enemy' as the grey eminence behind the Trade Federation, Palpatine also manages to be a supreme lightsabre wielder and general badass Force-user. Not to mention creating a secret clone army and taking on two apprentices. Oh, and he can do all this without the Jedi finding out.

Maybe he personally designed the Death Star as well.

It's fantasy, not sci-fi, and aside from the stupid "Frodo chases Sam away" bit I considered it pretty good (at least equal to the first two). Do you have a reason for disliking it, or are you trolling this board's Tolkien geeks?
