The reality of Canadian politics is that the Liberals are the only party capable of actually winning. None of the other parties has enough support. The Separatist party only stands in Quebec. The NDP is a fringe left wing party and the Conservatives' main constituency are the genetic and moral throwbacks from the Western Provinces (excluding the fine city of Vancouver). The Bloc Quebecois, a separatist party that fields candidates only in Quebec, was at 33 percent support in the French-speaking province of 7.5 million. The Conservatives were at 27 percent in Quebec and the Liberals trailed at 18 percent.

When Canada gets over its snit fit at the Liberals, and the Liberals stop doing stupid things like letting that pompous ass Ignatieff have anything to do with the party, normal service will be resumed.

But it really doesn't matter anyway. Canada is well into the era of managerial politics, so making a song and dance over possible changes of governments is futile. Of course the media will play up cosmetic differences because they need an excuse to exist, but other than that it will be more boring government. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing.

Maybe Quebec will try to separate again. That's about the only interesting thing that happens. I reckon they do it just to taunt the rest of you.

We have stealth nation technology. Surely we are capable of having the Queen sit in the throne during the speech. You think we are some kinda backwards yokels?

As for the senate, none of that new fangled idea of the people choosing their own representatives. Next thing you know they might actually clamour to vote for their head of state.

I edited my House of Lords statement. You call your upper house a Senate, which I didn't know... all I knew was that its members were "appointed by the governor general on the advice of the prime minister to serve until age 75"... which didn't sound like a Senate to me!!

Actually, we do have a monarch. I believe Austrailia and New Zealand (and others) do as well.

The throne is located near where the monarch lives. That would be in this palace thingie somewhere in London. We also have this really spiffy chair in the Senate. Liz has actually used it once or twice.

I think he's more annoyed by the fact that the only party other than Liberals that ever has a hope of forming a national government is conservative, even after the debacle.

The fact that people he disagrees with simply exist really seems to stick in his craw.

I can't see him really being happy that Liberals continually punk his fellow travellers by coopting any idea they ever had that stood a chance at popular support. I'd imagine he'd be seething if he actually had the faintest clue about some of the subjects he chooses to continually bang on about.
