    The death penalty is barbaric

    It's just what I think. Sure there's that "thou shall not kill" thing but I not religious. I could argue about human rights, ect. But I will not talk about that either...

    Now the question is why is the DP supported in countries where it is enacted and shunned in countries where it is not? The conundrum is that many of these countries aren't democratic... SO is the DP a similar factor of as the toga and baths were for the Romans? DP as cultural lacnus paper?

      Supporters of the death penalty do it, I believe, for at least one of two reasons: (1) They believe it acts as a deterrent; (2) they believe the act which the condemned did was so vile the condemned forfeited his right to life.

      Opponents usually take that stance that the death penalty is not a deterrent and indeed cheapens life so that murders are more likely to happen. They also tend to believe that killing people is wrong unless necessary to protect life.

            I didn't want to discus the DP per se; i wanted to talk about it as a dividing factor among different cultures.

            I don't see anything barbaric about this.

                          The death penalty is distasteful, to be sure.
                          I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter.                               There is also the group that believes that using the DP would be acceptable if it weren't for the fallibility of our justice system. It follows that the chance of killing an innocent, even if the chance is low, outweights whatever utility the DP may have.

                              I guess it's been a while since we had a DP thread, eh?
