So during this boom period the currency was suppose to get weaker, the deficit was suppose to grow, we were suppose to get defective imports, other countries were suppose to stockpile our currency, another country was suppose to obtain all of our technology, wages were suppose to be stagnate etcc...?

See now I never learned that it college. Please explain it. And what happens when the economy busts?

I would call that a bust, actually. Why would you call it a boom if it's accompanied by all negative traits?

Who said the U.S. had anything to do with developing penicillin? Certainly not I. However it was developed a handful of years after world war 1 ended, during a period when global trade had been seriously hampered and in a country which had many protectionist policies.

Likewise, the atomic bomb was developed when international trade was seriously hampered.

Serious advances were made in computing during world war 2 and lets not forget significant advances in radar, chemistry and electronics.

But yes, isolationism caused you to create the creative destructive force known to man.
It was still a significant technological development, the point being, it occured when international trade was hampered.

Hampering international trade does not necessarily hamper technological development.

"Command economies don't produce cures for cancer" may well be true, but it does not follow that protectionist economies cannot.

Poor countries with a poor populace do not produce great technological advances and all command economies in our world were poor. This has no relevance to protectionism.

They can produce whatever they want to. That's the benefit of a command economy.

Recession = bust period. Read the sites that you post. That would help a little bit.

Anyway this trend for republicans is by no means major. When it came time to vote for Cafta only half of them were willing to support it on free trade alone. The other half had to be cajoled, threatened, or otherwise convinced to vote for it on the decidedly un-free trade principle that doing this would help resist Chinese imports.

This is going to be one painful election cycle.

Why would you? You'd have to be a masochist to continue this flogging.

People don't want to have a decent conversation there's not much one can do.
